Whether or not you’ve read the books or seen the movie, chances are that you know what The Hunger Games series is about. But even with all the gory details within its pages (and on the screen), few could predict that the book would lead to a real-life tragedy.
A few weeks ago, 25-year-old Tere Parra fell 20 feet from a tree during a mock ‘Hunger Games’ activity with her friends in Provo, UT. Tere, who is from Mexico, had just completed a church service mission in L.A. and was visiting her younger sister in Utah. As an experienced climber, she couldn’t believe she’d lost her footing.
“When I fell, I was thinking, ‘Really? I’m falling?'” she told a local newspaper.
Tere snapped her spinal cord and was paralyzed from the waist down and for the past three weeks, she’s had to endure numerous surgeries in hopes of repairing all of her Hunger Games-related injuries including a shattered face and broken back.
Climbing trees features prominently in The Hunger Games with Katniss climbing a tree to escape Cato. The character of Rue is also a good climber and several scenes within the movie take place high up in trees. Role playing, a.k.a. cosplay is an increasingly popular activity for fans to act out scenes from books and movies, or create their own. It’s like fan fic come to life.
Tere seems to be keeping a positive attitude throughout her ordeal, smiling in photos and also in this video below where she is seen using a wheelchair after her accident. To learn more about her story or to donate to her recovery, visit fundly.com/btereslegs.
