The debate is over; Catching Fire has found its Johanna Mason in Jena Malone. In an official statement made by The Hunger Games filmmakers and Lionsgate, the star from Sucker Punch — or, more widely-known, Step Mom — accepted the role as the female victor from District 7.
Jena’s new character is described as a young lady in her early twenties, but also “one of the most psychologically scarred Quarter Quell participants.” And since she is the last-living female victor from her district, she is forced into the 75th Games in Catching Fire. SPOILER: Just like Katniss. She doesn’t exactly fit the physical characteristics — ‘wide-set brown eyes’ and ‘spiky hair’ – but hey, neither did Josh Hutcherson or Liam Hemsworth.
When the casting for this particular part first made headlines, rumors were spreading that Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska and model Zoe Aggeliki were the two frontrunners. But both were quick to dispel any such gossip.
Notable actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amanda Plummer are also set to take on big characters in the sequel to The Hunger Games. Philip as Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and Amanda as the eccentric Wiress AKA Nuts.
Meanwhile, the role of Finnick Odair is still up in the air, but may soon come to a close as well considering Snow White and the Huntsman‘s Sam Claflin‘s been tapped to play the hunky-albeit-arrogant Tribute. Although there hasn’t been word from the studio just yet, media outlets are already securing his place in the franchise.
