Although the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries isn’t set to return until October — ugh! — one of the hit show’s stars is onto something else to sink your teeth into. In case you didn’t get the notice, Candice Accola (AKA TVD‘s Caroline) plays Chloe in season 2 of Alloy web series Dating Rules from My Future Self. And just in time for the premiere — which is today! — we interviewed Candice on her personal dating advice, Caroline & Tyler’s relationship, a possible collaboration with Kat Graham, plus her feelings on her old buddy… Miley Cyrus!
Teen.com: Why’d you decide to join Dating Rules?
Candice: Well, it was working with people who are already part of the family. Shiri Appleby starred in the first season, and it just had so many wonderful people attached to it. It was just so serendipitous, so when it popped up, I just went to my apartment in Greenwich. I was staying right around the corner from all my girlfriends and we were having so many late-night dinners, talking about dating and life and relationships, and it just fell right in the pocket of what was surrounding my life at the moment.
Teen.com: If you were able to give your teen self any dating advice, what would it be?
Candice: That’s the hard thing — a bunch of my girlfriends and I have been having this debate. Would you want advice from your future self? And it’s kind of a split 50/50 because you kind of feel that to give advice to your future self it would be good, but sometimes that’s how you learn. And then also, that’s one of my favorite things about this web series; even though future Chloe is giving present Chloe advice, she’s not saying “Well, if you don’t do this, it’s the end all, be all.” She’s like, “I’m here; I just want to give you higher perspective. I just want you to think about this.” So I guess if I had anything to give my younger self, it would be, “If you’re not happy, just move on. It’s OK. Sometimes the people who you think are the end all, be all are definitely not the end all, be all.” But at the same time, you need to learn those lessons. Sometimes you need to date a loser to appreciate the good guy. Not everyone, but some girls do.
Teen.com: Ha, have you dated any losers?
Candice: Oh yeah! [Afterwards I'm] like, “What was I thinking?” But that’s what you do when you’re just dating and you’re figuring it all out. Then someone great comes along and it’s a whole new appreciation to what they bring to your life.
Teen.com: Your Vampire Diaries character ended up dating her best friend’s ex. Do you think best friends’ exes are off limits IRL?
Candice: In real life, best friends exes… I think it’s usually a pretty big no-no. I think there’s usually always a silver lining and a lot of things are very circumstantial. If it’s like, “Hey, I know you dated this guy when you were 14 and now we’re 28 and met on Facebook…” You know, there’s obviously a big jump there. It can be circumstantial, but it can also be a big no-no.
Teen.com: Talking about relationships, last time we saw Caroline, she was still with Tyler — and now Klaus is in his body! How does she find out?
Candice: I can tell you that Caroline will figure it out fairly quickly in the season, and she’ll definitely have an opinion on it.
Teen.com: Anything you can spill about vampire Elena?
Candice: The viewers are going to have to watch. I just don’t want to say anything that’ll… it’s all so good. The writers are doing such a great job with it. I think there’s just such a beautiful marriage of moments from season one, and the simplicity of getting to know a character all over again. It’s that experience that everyone has from season one of getting to know these characters and it’s from a whole new perspective. I don’t even want to risk spoiling it. It’ll be great.
