The hunt is over, once and for all. After testing out candidates — including Nick Jonas — throughout the duration of the summer, the search for the American Idol, Season 12 judging panel has reached its end. Unfortunately for all of the Jonas Brothers fans out there, Nick will not be sitting alongside Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson. Instead, say hello to new male and female additions, who should look at least a little familiar: Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj.
FOX President of Alternative Mike Darnell says of the fresh AI faces: “Nicki (who was rumored to seal a spot on the show as early as late August) is an unbelievably captivating international phenomenon who has made an indelible mark on rap and pop. And Keith is another great addition to Idol — he’s one of the biggest stars in country music and I know that our fans and contestants will fall in love with him. With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan [Seacrest], we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around.”
The CEO of Idol owner FremantleMedia, Cecile Frot-Coutaz, echos the President’s sentiments, and went even further with her own statement. She says Nicki ”represents a different side of the music industry, who has now crossed into mainstream culture with her unique artistry, style and flair.” As for Keith, she exclaims that he’s ”one of country music’s true stars who brings with him charm, wit and knowledge about the industry.”
Before this recent announcement, Miley Cyrus and former-American Idol contestant Adam Lambert were rumored to fill the vacancies left by Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as well. But now that the decision’s finite, here’s the real question: Which reality singing competition will be better in its newest season, American Idol or The X Factor? (Vote here!)
