Teen Interviews: Nancy C. Hangs Backstage With Ed Sheeran In NYC (EXCLUSIVE)

@teen

Nancy’s funny letter landed her the job of interviewing Ed Sheeran for us in NYC. Check out her Q&A with Ed below!

First of all, I must thank Teen.com for giving me these tickets (Wow. I feel like I’m making one of those Oscar speeches…). I ended up taking my good friend, Maya who interviewed Ed with me and made it less awkward.

You know, I still can’t believe that, I, a partially-normal 8th grader from a school that forces us to wear preppy uniforms, was chosen to interview Ed Sheeran who, by the way, was a really nice guy who also has a very nice British accent. GAH. If I had a British accent, I would be talking non-stop.

Unfortunately, I don’t. Now, be prepared, very prepared, to read our supermegaawesomefoxyhot interview. We tried to not sound like typical interviewers with typical questions, just so you know. I guess it’s up to you whether we failed… or not.

Do you like your hair?
Ed: I do like my hair. It took a while to come around to the fact that it was quite a unique value point.
F.O.E.(Friend of Ed): And girls spend all their time dying their hair red but he just gets it for free.

Did you think that the first question was stupid?
Ed: No, it’s Teen.com so it makes more sense than asking my political views in African countries.

How many guys go to your concerts?
Ed: Well, in England, pretty much half and half. In Australia, about 2% of guys. In America, it kind of varies from place to place so I’ll probably say a lower percentage. In Germany though, it was mostly guys. But yeah, it depends.

We noticed the audience is mostly blond and we were just wondering why?
F.O.E.: I asked you the same question earlier.
Ed: Um… Maybe I just attract people with pale skin to my shows because I have pale skin…

Which song do you dislove the most?
Ed: I don’t really hate anything. I don’t really know… Actually, you know what, one of my really old songs and I’m not even going to say what song it was. It was one of those songs I wished I never recorded.

How’s your mom?
Ed: My mom’s good. My mom’s making jewelry at the moment and having a lot of fun doing that. She just got Twitter. She’s pretty mental because she doesn’t really know how to use it yet.

Who’s your favorite singer, OTHER than yourself?
Ed: I’m on tour with one of them actually. I would say Passenger, my supporting actor. I think he’s great. He’s one of my favorite singers. [Turns out Passenger is the name of the guy, not as in passenger on the tour bus. We got a bit confused there.]

One Direction: Awesome or Lame?
Ed: They’re all really nice guys who all can sing. It’s a very important thing, I think, for the music they’re making.

Are you ever going to write a non-meaningful song anytime soon?
Ed: No, because I don’t think there would be any meaning in that.

What’s your guitar’s name?
Ed: Trevor.

Do you think NYC is swasome (swag+awesome) because of us?
Ed: I do think it’s swasome because of you!

Did you know swag basically means flowerpot?
Ed: Did you know swag in England meant ‘rubbish’ and then Americans started saying swag meaning good and suddenly everyone in England says swag meaning good as well.

How do you feel about having the most illegally downloaded album on the Internet?
Ed: I think I need to accept the fact that I am where I am today because fans have shared my music illegally AND legally but I wouldn’t be here today without the Internet so, I can’t speak out against it.

Percy Jackson vs. Harry Potter.
Ed: Harry Potter is awesome.

If you were a fairy, what would be your power?
Ed: Healing.

Aren’t we the best interviewers in the world?
Ed: Definitely the most interesting.

And we stay on topic a lot, don’t we?
Ed: Yep.

Then, we took a picture with him:

I’m so photogenic that it hurts my eyes.
Advanced sarcasm, right there.

The only thing I regret is not asking him to sign something. Sigh… The picture is pretty amazing so, I’m not going to complain anymore.

After the picture and interview, we got to skip a long line of mostly girls. Thanks, Ed’s manager! The concert was fabulous. The effects and the lighting was fabulous. The supporting acts were fabulous. So much fabulousness in the air. The first opening act, Selah Sue had the nicest accent that I could hear while she sang.

Passenger lead us along a sing-a-long where everyone sang off-key loudly but, no one minded because it was fun. But I have to say, when Ed came on, my ears were ringing from the screaming of the girls behind me. The lights on the stage made the pictures look a little blurry but from our center-balcony spot, we could see everything clearly. Standing for three hours was worth it because he is an oh, so, very talented singer.

For anyone debating whether or not to go to an Ed Sheeran concert, GO. If you can, of course. His studio-recorded songs are already incredible, but his live show is phenomenal. If you’re a fan, beg your mom, your dad, save up money, enter a contest or any other way you can think to get tickets. It will be a night of loud singing, screaming, swaying, listening, and enjoying good music.
