Taylor Swift Donates to School for the Deaf After Internet Prank

WENN

For once, an Internet hoax had a happy ending. Earlier this year, Papa John’s pizzeria and online textbook company Chegg sponsored a contest for students to enter for a chance to win an on-campus performance from “Begin Again” singer Taylor Swift via Facebook votes. The top five schools with the most clicks would win $10,000, and the #1 would also get the special appearance from Taylor. One school in particular soared to the top of the list of entrants with more than 20 thousand votes — but not necessarily for admirable reasons…

Once posters on 4chan and Reddit learned of the challenge, they began to campaign for users to support a public school in Allston (a neighborhood in Boston, MA). A public school for the deaf in Allston, to be more precise. Since the contest promised to send Taylor to whichever school garnered the most recognition on FB, The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing became the sole focus of Internet pranksters. According to one Reddit user, “The concept is still hilarious, at least to me.”

However, the joke’s now on those who participated in the prank, as Horace Mann (though removed from the official running due to the degrading nature of the voting process) was granted a personal donation of $10,000 from Taylor herself, matched by CoverGirl (which Taylor’s a current spokesperson for) and American Greetings. In addition, VH1′s Save the Music program shelled out $10,000 worth of instruments for the Allston school’s students. On top of that, Miss Swift says that all of the attendees will receive tickets to her next local show. Principal/headmaster Jeremiah Ford tells The Boston Globe, ”Are we the winner? Absolutely.”

Leave it to Taylor to put bullies in their place. After all, she wrote a whole song about them. Why you gotta be so mean? Still, do you agree with the contest official’s decision to not have Taylor perform at the school even though it won?

How is the joke on the pranksters now?
The prank was meant to offend Swift and not the school. And that apparently worked, or the school wouldn’t have been removed.
And the school would have gotten 10,000$, so how was that prank bad exactly?
Also I’m pretty sure none of the bad bad internet people is mad that a school for the deaf got money.

What I don’t really get though is why she gave them concert tickets, but didn’t perform for them. Isn’t that the same dif?

how was it supposed to offend swift? the idea is that deaf kids, NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAR REAL WELL, wouldn’t be all that gratified to have a singer perform at the school. the dummies that thott it would be so funny clearly don’t understand that not all deaf ppl are completely without hearing and even those with the most profound hearing loss enjoy music. what’s worse is that none of the parties involved, once it was found that the vote had been unfairly skewed, (which, btw, is why the school was removed, it had nothing to do with anyone being offended, derrrrrr) had to pony up anything to the school, those kids would have been sh*t out of luck on the 10K, whether they cared about her performing or not. it’s not funny to think of a bunch of little kids getting told they got booted from the contest because a bunch of a-holes with no lives jacked things up for them for no good reason other than the idea of deaf kids “listening” to taylor swift sing is funny to them. and i ask you, would you rather hear one or two songs from your favorite band, or go to a concert and hear a few HOURS of your favorite band? THAT’S “the dif”. don’t like taylor swift? sell your tix! everybody wins. this could have backfired on that school and they could have ended up empty handed. how is that funny? nm, idk why i would ask a fool for answers…

Before you call me a fool, learn how to type, please.

        >how was it supposed to offend swift? the idea is that deaf kids, NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAR REAL WELL, wouldn’t be all that gratified to have a singer perform at the school.

        No.
The idea was that Taylor Swifts music was so horrible that sending her to a school, where no one could hear her would be a benefit for everyone. You just have to look around on the internet a bit to get that.
So yes, it was to offend Swift.

        >what’s worse is that none of the parties involved, once it was found that the vote had been unfairly skewed, (which, btw, is why the school was removed, it had nothing to do with anyone being offended, derrrrrr) had to pony up anything to the school, those kids would have been sh*t out of luck on the 10K, whether they cared about her performing or not.

Voting for the wrong reason doesn’t negate the legitimacy of your vote.
So this sounds more like the organizer of the poll/the record label/Swift not wanting to go through with their promise, just because giving in to the trolls/ performing in front of deaf kids might be embarrassing for them.

        >and i ask you, would you rather hear one or two songs from your favorite band, or go to a concert and hear a few HOURS of your favorite band? THAT’S “the dif”.

I have to admit, I didn’t catch that she was only going to perform two songs for them. I thought it was going to be a private concert, that’s why I asked.

        >idk why i would ask a fool for answers…

You know, raging in bad grammar doesn’t make you look all that intelligent.

I really don’t think they care that the school got money. And the prank was clearly meant to offend Swift or at least put her in an awkward situation. Also, why did she offer them free tickets? To watch her play music? She clearly doesn’t understand what deaf means. If she has fans there, she should just go visit them…

    “Internet Prank”
Can’t tell if article writer is attempting to upset trolls or the writer just doesn’t know the internet exists.

I’m failing to see how anything negative came out of this, or how “the joke’s now on those who participated in the prank”. Seems to me that it was a winning situation for all parties involved.

I think they need to examine the definition of “Bully” in this article. I see 20 thousand people having a good laugh and a school for the deaf getting a massive check. How is any of this bullying? So Taylor was the but of the joke, if you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? She didn’t seem to be heartbroken anyway, though that seems a first for her. (Yes, that’s another joke at her expense)

The person who wrote this article doesn’t know how internet trolling works doesn’t she?

      Tashy says:

Yeah, if it wasn’t for these “bullies” (trolls) this school would never have gotten any of this. I really don’t think it was bullying, it was the internet community banding together to have a laugh (albeit at someone elses expense but that’s how many jokes work), and ultimately get some attention for the ones involved. Good work internet!

yeh so to start with the joke never backfired, this was a prank and it worked the deaf school got to the top. Secondly they should never of been pulled from the competition, that should probably looked into more as clearly Taylor Swifts management didn’t want her playing in the school. Also how are the people at reddit and 4chan the bad guys here they were the ones who got the school and competition the publicity to force Taylor Swift to donate the cash.
btw when this happened to Pitbull he actually fully fulfilled the competition and didn’t make some silly excuse to get out of it, so it’s not swift just good pr guys.
