With the surge in dystopian novels translating to the big screen — The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments and Divergent are just a select few that come to mind — it makes sense that television networks start picking up on the trend as well. And that’s exactly what FOX is doing with its latest order for Delirium.

According to TVLine, Karyn Usher, one of the writers and producers for shows such as Bones and Prison Break, also wrote the pilot episode for the potential FOX series, based on the bestselling Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver.

To give you some background, Delirium is set in a world where love is considered a disease (slash illegal) and everyone must undergo a special treatment when they turn 18 years old to be cured of the “illness.” There are particular cases where the cure’s been administered prior, but it’s not recommended due to plausible complications. However, with just three months until her 18th birthday and scheduled procedure, lead protagonist Lena Holoway falls into the unspeakable — in love.

So, why not a movie instead of the small screen? Author Lauren Oliver took to her Tumblr today to explain: “The deal is that FOX, which initially optioned the books for film, decided that due to the complexity of all the side plots and characters, the Delirium series might be better suited for TV, as we’d have a chance to explore all of those elements… I know that some of you are concerned that a TV show will be “untrue” to the books… Look, the books will always be the books. No adaptation, either for film or TV, will or can completely replicate and remain faithful to them — it’s a totally different art form!”

She continues, “The talented people writing the show aren’t trying to take anything away from the story, their goal is to add and expand, and give us all more time with the characters that we love. The wonderful thing about an expansive medium like television is that there is the time and space to explore smaller elements of the story and the world that would have detracted from the momentum of a novel. Think of how much Julian we’ll get! Think of how much Alex we’ll see!”

So far, no details have been given as to the roll-out date for the pilot, but at least avid Delirium fans can look forward to the third and final book in the series, Requiem, releasing March 2013. Oh, and there just so happens to be a contest going on at this very moment — courtesy of Figment, HarperTeen and yours truly — where you can win the ultimate prize: a two-day trip to the HarperTeen offices in New York City and a one-year book column on Teen.com! The challenge: Write a story in which love is dangerous (like in the Delirium trilogy). For more details, plus information on how to enter, click on the link below.
