Though we’re still waiting to find out who will play Four, it appears as though Oscar winner Kate Winslet will be part of the Divergent cast. Variety is reporting that the Titanic actress is in talks to join the big screen adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s YA novel of the same name. Though this is exciting news for Divergent fans, the role Kate would be playing remains unknown.
If you’re not up to speed on Divergent, the sure-to-be action-packed film will center on a 16-year-old named Beatrice Prior, or “Tris” (played by Shailene Woodley) who lives in a dystopian Chicago somewhere in the near future. All 16-year-olds must go through a ceremony where they decide which “faction” they’ll live in for the rest of their lives. The factions are based on human traits, and though it’s rare, Tris decides to abandon her faction for a life of danger in a different faction. There she meets an instructor named Four, who she begins a somewhat forbidden romance with.
Though it’s still not known who will play Four, actors such as Alex Pettyfer and Lucas Till are reportedly in the running. The film will be directed by Limitless‘ Neil Burger, with a screenplay written by Snow White and the Huntsman‘s Evan Daugherty. Filming is scheduled to begin in Chicago this April, with an expected release date of March 21, 2014.
Many are expecting Divergent to be a big blockbuster hit, and Shailene recently spoke about the comparisons of Divergent to The Hunger Games and Twilight, saying, “I read the book, and I thought that it was really — my whole thing, to be honest, is I never wanted to do big films. I’ve been acting for 16 years, and it was never something that I wanted to do, to be in a big blockbuster film, especially one that was similar to Hunger Games or Twilight. You know, one that had a huge pre-existing fanbase and something that would carry on for multiple years.” However, once she read the book, she completely changed her mind, saying she was “profoundly moved.”
