You know how you always have that one friend who’s way cooler than you? CONFESSION: Jake Robinson is mine. After all, he’s going to be back-to-back on both The Carrie Diaries and Smash this season! (FYI, he’s the guy seen above in white.) And Jake is the real deal, too. Not only is he the sweetest person you’d ever hope to meet, but he’s also mega-talented. 12 years after getting into the game, he allowed me to ask him all about the gossip on set, his favorite people at work and — natch — how he holds it all down.

Teen: Could you describe your character on The Carrie Diaries for me?
Jake Robinson: Bennett, at heart, is a socialite. He works at Interview magazine as a gossip columnist. I would describe him as someone who has a big heart, but also just likes to have fun — but also someone who takes his work very seriously at Interview.

Teen: What was the first thing you did when you found out that you booked the show?
Jake: I was on my way to Florida and I promised my beautiful girlfriend, Lindsay, a cruise to celebrate and then I called my mama.

Teen: We saw last night that both Carrie and Walt are interested in your character. Can you go into the details a little bit more?
Jake: It’s complicated like most relationships… but let’s say that Bennett has a vested interest in multiple characters in different ways.

Teen: How many episodes will you be on?
Four for sure, but hopefully many more! I think there’s a strong likelihood [that I could come back in later episodes]. Let’s just say this wont be the last you see of Bennett Wilcox.

Teen: Bennett’s about the age you are now, but this is based in the ’80s around the time you were born. What’s that like?
It’s been interesting getting to know more about the 1980s, especially from a fashion and cultural standpoint. So many of the environments that we are working in actually existed like Limelight or Interview magazine. Everything is different from the style of dancing to the way people interacted. I think the show does a good job of staying true to that reality.

Teen: How would you describe each of your co-stars (so far)?
Jake: I can honestly say it’s been a very chill and great group to work with. [If I had to describe ’em in one word, I’d say] ‘witty’ for AnnaSophia [Robb] and ‘philosophical’ for Austin Butler

Teen: Any pranks or big events you can divulge from behind the scenes?
Jake: The other day, it was Brendan Dooling‘s (Walt) birthday and we totally surprised him. He was floored.

Teen: Let’s talk Smash. Will you be singing?
Jake: I will not be singing, though I would say that I have a decent voice.

Teen: You’re actually gonna be on tonight’s show! Could you describe your role?
Jake: He is a drummer in a band; think bad boy. It’s a pretty small part; blink and you might miss me.

Teen: You still get to work with incredible talent. How did you keep it together?
Jake: I kept it low key, because they kept it low key. All the “stars” are very gracious and happy to be working.

Teen: How many episodes will you be on?
I will be in two episodes.

Teen: After these two shows, what’s up next for you?
Well, I have a short film on Showtime coming out this summer and an indie feature making the festival circuit, and a horror film that will hopefully go to theaters.

Teen: And finally, if there’s one thing that you want Teen readers to know about you, it’s that _________.
I had a pet duck when I was a kid.

Make sure to check out Jake on tonight’s episode of Smash on NBC, and future episodes of The Carrie Diaries! Got a question for Jake? Ask away in the comments!
