‘Harry Potter’ Covers Get Revamped for 15th Anniversary

While the Harry Potter big-screen movie franchise may be over, its original book format’s still receiving the royal treatment. For the 15th anniversary of the U.S. publication of the first novel in the J.K. Rowling series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, publisher Scholastic plans to release seven new covers for the editions of the novels hitting shelves in September 2013; the first image premiering today.

American graphic novel author and illustrator Kazu Kibuishi designed each of the fresh editions, though they’re not meant to replace the originals by Mary GrandPr√©. Those will still be available via hardcover, while the new ones will be accessible only by paperback. Each will focus on a scene from that particular novel. The first one, as you can see above, is of Harry’s first time walking through Diagon Alley with Hagrid after learning of his magical abilities.

According to USA Today, President of Scholastic Trade Publishing Ellie Berger says, “[W]e thought it was time for a fresh approach as of a way of attracting the interest of a new generation of 8- and 9-year-olds who may know Harry mostly through the movies.”

This isn’t the only recent development on the Harry Potter front. At the end of last year, reports of a ninth HP film spread like wildfire among the fandom after some of the cast, including Helena Bonham Carter (a.k.a. Bellatrix Lestrange), was spotted filming scenes in Hertfordshire. However, the additional footage is only meant to be seen in Harry Potter theme parks.
