Back in 2007, the Disney Channel audience was introduced to fresh face Selena Gomez (unless you count her one-time stint on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody the year prior) as Miley Cyrus‘ nemesis, Mikayla, on Hannah Montana, then, of course, as Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place. But this isn’t the same girl you met six years ago. She’s older, taking on more mature roles, and shedding the ‘innocent’ shell she once had. And she’s talking all about it in her interview with Harper’s Bazaar…
“I’ve been smiling for six years. I’m not smiling anymore,” she says with a hint of her dry sense of humor. “It’s fun to do something that’s not necessarily for my fans. And Harmony [Korine, her Spring Breakers director] really believed in me.”
Her style’s going through some revamping as well: “If I’m going to the MTV Movie Awards, I’m going to dress a certain way, but if I’m going to the MTV Music Awards, it can be a little more out there. I mean, I’m probably the only one that notices, but there’s two distinct Selenas.”
Despite her obvious changes, and her very public break-up with Justin Bieber, she still believes in a little thing called love: “I believe in love — yes, I’m one of those girls… To me, love is normal. Of course, you see Jay and Beyoncé and you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, they’re perfect for each other,’ but at the end of the day their love is just like everybody else’s love. They have problems, I’m sure, and they solve them, like anybody else. So to make it as normal as possible — in such an abnormal lifestyle — was super important to both [Justin and me]. Which was great… That’s how it should be.”
