While we’re still reeling over the news of Caleb leaving Rosewood for Ravenswood, it looks like there’s a little bit more insight as to why he was chosen. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Pretty Little Liars‘ creator I. Marlene King revealed that Caleb’s mysterious past was the perfect backdrop for this PLL spin-off.
“In terms of the mythology of Ravenswood, there is a reason his character was chosen. Caleb has an ambiguous past. He doesn’t know as much about where he comes from compared to the other [characters] and we’re going to use that as we unfold the Ravenswood story.” Last we saw Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), he had just met his real dad, who skipped town after being set up by A. Though Tyler will appear on season four of the hit show premiering in June, we have a feeling they’ll set it up so he can learn more about his past — hence the move.
Tyler’s on-screen GF Ashley Benson also spoke to ET about the big news, saying that she was “so sad” when she first learned Haleb was pretty much over. However, she’s mostly happy for Tyler, as she said, “This is the thing, I’m so happy for Tyler, he deserves it so much, but he’s like my other half! He’s just amazing. When the day comes to shoot his last scene, I’m not going to be able to do it. I mean, I don’t want to give him away to these other people. But, I talked to Marlene about [how Caleb will be written off PLL] and I’m excited for people to see that because I’m pretty happy with how she told me their story would end.”
And don’t you fret Haleb fans, the show’s creator has assured that this couple will get a proper goodbye. “Hanna really gives Caleb permission to leave Rosewood and, basically, go to this other show [laughs]. I hope our fans embrace it as much as we’ve embraced it as writers. That’s important to us.”
