Disney

Well, we’ve got some good news, and some bad news. The good news is that Brave heroine Merida officially joined the ranks of 10 other Disney princesses over the weekend! The bad news? They gave her a super glamorous make over that has upset a lot of people.

If you haven’t seen it, Brave centers on Merida who is fiercely independent, and doesn’t need help from a male suitor to figure out her problems. Many were delighted to see a character who was such a powerful role model for young girls, and showed that you don’t need a Prince Charming to rescue you.

However, her princess induction came with a makeover that included a slimmer waist, sparkly new duds, a tamed down mane, and an overall more girly look. We can see why they would do this from a marketing standpoint — little girls love glam princesses — but it’s rather upsetting that they didn’t just leave Merida as is.

In fact, female empowerment website A Mighty Girl launched a petition on Change.org to keep Merida as is, and has gained almost 125,000 signatures. Below, you can read an excerpt as to why they thing the make over was such a poor decision.

“The redesign of Merida in advance of her official induction to the Disney Princess collection does a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls’ capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired. Moreover, by making her skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, you are sending a message to girls that the original, realistic, teenage-appearing version of Merida is inferior; that for girls and women to have value — to be recognized as true princesses — they must conform to a narrow definition of beauty.”

What do YOU think of her make over? Is it justified? Or should they have just left Merida’s look alone? Share your thoughts in the comments section, and vote in the poll below!

She looks the same, but her face looks smushed. It’s not that big of a deal.

“making her skinnier, sexier”… no way, old Merida is totally sexier

That’s like saying Mulan should have worn a dress through the whole movie! Just because she is a princess doesn’t mean she has to dress up and ruin the character personality and her ideas in the movie!

Nobody’s making a scene. It’s just that the whole point of Merida was so that she showed people that she was INDEPENDENT. That she was strong and she didn’t want a guy to come and save her. Her look is important because that’s how some of us think we look! We finally had someone to look up to that wasn’t looking Barbie-perfect. Even though she has frizzy hair, and doesn’t act like a princess, she still stands up for herself, and is brave and strong and courageous. It showed a lot of little that it doesn’t matter wether or not you LOOK like a princess; it matters if you ACT like one. Changing her look to something superficial completely changed her entire reason for existing in the first place!

Does it matter as long as the story remains the same her look shouldn’t matter. Beside isnt focusing on looks the problem here. If she looked “more girly” from the beginning would that have made a difference now. Plus no one complained about the little mermaid Ariel losing the tail and simplistic look for a gown. All the princess changes their look once they were a princess/queen. Its how it works.

I don’t think this is a big deal, but maybe the dress should be a little higher up.
