Insidious: Chapter 2 hits theaters on Friday, but we were recently able to catch up with one of its stars! That’s right, we chatted with Ty Simpkins to get the low down on the movie, if he got scared during filming, and much more!
In case you need a refresher: Insidious Chapter 2 centers on the haunted Lambert family, as they try to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
For more – he even chats about working Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3! – read our Q&A with Ty below!
Did you ever get scared filming scenes for this movie?
Totally! I seriously get creeped out. Our make-up, set designers and props master were really great on Insidious 1 and 2; they are all so awesome. So, imagine this: creepy set, creepy ghosts all reaching and grabbing for you in a dark room with the “further” mist all around you – yeah, I get pretty caught up in it. My imagination just gets the best of me, or as James (Wan) says, ‘I have a very active imagination.’ It’s true. Thankfully I never once dreamed or have had nightmares about it. When filming is over, it all left my body.
Were you allowed to watch the first movie? Will you watch this one?
I was allowed to watch the first one but I chose not to. My sister, Ryan and I, (and our mom) were in Toronto for the midnight screening at TIFF [Toronto International Film Festival]. The plan was me and Ryan really thought we would watch it at the festival, but when Leigh Whannell was introduced before the screening, he came out on stage riding a red tricycle and wearing the Saw mask. After that, Ryan and I decided to sit in the Green Room instead. I just couldn’t do it, especially at midnight. We have shown it at our Halloween party the past two years on this outdoor theater we make at our house. But think about it – Halloween, in the dark, outside? I don’t know about that. As for Chapter 2 – I really am going to try to watch it (I said try).
You’ve been in films like Revolutionary Road, Iron Man 3, and Insidious with great actors. Who’s been your favorite to with work?
Yeah, I am really lucky. My favorite person to work with is my sister, Ryan. Just because we just know each other so well and we hang out and like a lot of the same stuff. But people that stand out in my memory are Sam Mendez, Russell Crowe, Patrick Wilson, Todd Field, James Wan, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s all really kind of normal for me because I don’t know what it’s like to not work with such cool people. I don’t think I actually realized this until maybe last year when I was auditioning for Iron Man 3 and I got a call from Robert Downey Jr. at school. And everyone was like, “He called you on the phone? At school?” And I was like, “Yeah, that’s not normal?” Apparently it’s not. Working with Robert was the most different experience I have ever had in the very best way. And even now, he’s a really great person – and totally normal – but he won’t agree with me on that.
Is there anyone in particular you hope to work with in the future?
I get asked that a lot. I guess I kind of made a list. I really want to meet and work with JJ Abrams. Everyone talks about what a nice director he is and he has kids and stuff so he sounds really awesome, not to mention he makes awesome movies. I’d like to work with Steven Spielberg “again,” mostly because when I worked with him I was only 3 and I do have some memories of him and filming and stuff [War of the Worlds], but I was only 3. Joss Whedon, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, I think every three or four years I HAVE to work with Patrick Wilson because that is what we have done since I was little. Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost,Edgar Wright, Ron Howard. I can go on and on I think.
What do you like to do when you’re not acting?
Now I am in school so that takes up most of my time, but outside of school, I like to play and talk about video games, hanging out with my friends. I really want to learn to play Dungeons and Dragons [working on that]. I belong to an improv group, I play cello, I have these phases – fencing, tae kwon do, baseball, ice hockey, boogie boarding in the summer, snowboarding in the winter.
Do you have a favorite television show?
I don’t really watch a lot of TV but, I do watch Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Looney Tunes and old classic cartoons. I am totally going to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Do you have a favorite book series?
IMDB shows you as working with Willow Shields on an upcoming movie? Is that true? Have you met her?
Nope, I haven’t met her, and yes it’s true. Conversations with Andy is supposed to shoot 2014 I think. So we will see. I really like that script. It’s about this kid named Ben (I play Ben), whose parents are going through a divorce and I am having a hard time dealing with that. I meet Andy Warhol and he gives me advice.
Hunger Games or Harry Potter?
Harry Potter, duh.
Favorite subject in school?
Does Lunch count? If not, History!
