It’s pretty clear that One Direction is here to stay, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have some competition! Ever since 1D exploded onto the music scene a few years ago thanks to their stint on the U.K. version of The X Factor, boy bands have been popping up all over the place.
So, to see who they’re up against, we thought we’d round up 10 bands who have the potential to reach 1D levels of fame. Check them out below! Did we miss one of your faves? Shout them out in the comments section!
5 Seconds of Summer
You might have heard of 5 Seconds of Summer thanks to their opening gig during One Direction's "Take Me Home" tour, but this Australian boy band just might eventually one-up their tour mates. The guys -- Luke Hemmings (vocals, guitar), Michael Clifford (guitar, vocals), Calum Hood (bass guitar, vocals) and Ashton Irwin (drums, vocals) -- should consider one of their biggest hits "Heartbreak Girl," as it has over 5 MILLION views on YouTube.
After Romeo is another band that could possibly steal 1D's thunder, as their recent song "Free Fall" is doing quite well. Also, they have a dedicated Twitter following, that loves interacting with the guys: Drew Ryan Scott, Jayk Purdy, T.C. Carter, Blake English and Devin Fox.
AJR is new to the music scene, but they already have Demi Lovato on their side! In September 2013, they opened up for her as she performed at a fair in Pomona, Calif. and have been gaining fans ever since. The video for their song "I'm Ready" got over 100K views in just 24 hours. Also, expect to see them on the road with Fifth Harmony! These brothers -- Adam Met, Jack Met, and Ryan Met -- sure are making a splash.
Before You Exit
Yet another set of brothers on the music scene! This time around, we're talking about Before You Exit -- aka Connor, Riley, and Toby McDonough. They're first single "I Like That" has nearly 1 million views on YouTube, and they even got Disney star Stefanie Scott to appear in the vid. In addition to that, they even opened up for Olly Murs and Cody Simpson!
No, they're not named after The Hunger Games! District 3 made their first appearance on the music scene in 2012 when they competed on the UK version of The X Factor. Since then, they've released a self-titled EP and have quite the Twitter audience with almost 500K followers!
Emblem3 is another example of how losing The X Factor isn't the worst thing ever. The guys -- Wesley Stromberg, Keaton Stromberg, and their friend Drew Chadwick -- competed on the US version of the show in 2012, and came in fourth place. Since then, they've toured with Selena Gomez, and released their debut album titled, Nothing to Lose.
Midnight Red aka Colton Rudloff, Anthony Ladao, Thomas Augusto, Joey Diggs Jr., and Eric Secharia already have some major boy band street cred! Back in 2011, they opened up for New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys on their tour and have been gaining popularity ever since. Also, their music video for their single "Take Me Home" has over 2.6 millions views -- not too shabby!
OK, so R5 isn't technically a "boy band" since there is a girl in the mix, but that doesn't take away from how popular they are! Featuring three brothers -- Ross, Riker, and Rocky Lynch, as well as their sister Rydell -- and their pal Ellington Lee Ratliff, they dropped their album Louder in fall 2013. The video for their single "Pass Me By" has over 1 million views already!
The Vamps are yet another British import who might give One Direction a run for their money. Still relatively new to the music scene, The Vamps -- Bradley William Simpson, James Daniel McVey, Connor Samuel John Ball, and Tristan Oliver Vance Evans -- released their first music video for the tune "Can We Dance" has garnered over 4 million views!
It looks like The X Factor is sort of responsible for the resurgence in boy bands, as Union J is yet another group that competed on the series. They finished fourth on the UK version of the show in 2012. One of their first singles "Carry You" was released in April 2013, and has over 5 million views on YouTube. The guys -- George Shelley, Josh Cuthbert, JJ Hamblett and Jaymi Hensley -- are quite popular (as you can imagine). In fact, it was rumored that George was dating none other than Selena Gomez. Dating rumors? That's when you know you've made it!
