WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS MILD CATCHING FIRE SPOILERS. IF YOU HOPE TO STAY SPOILER-FREE UNTIL ITS RELEASE ON FRIDAY, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!

I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of Catching Fire a couple of weeks ago, and the main takeaway I want you all to understand is that it’s AMAZING. It’s lightyears better than the first (although the Gary Ross-directed movie holds a VERY special place in my heart…), and fans will not be disappointed. That being said… there’s one major issue I have with it.

While the movie follows the book practically to a T (seriously, the end scene after the hovercraft picks her up is pretty much an EXACT reenactment of what happens in the novel), there is one scene I’m pretty upset they left out — Katniss and Peeta’s special day before heading into the arena. If you read the book, you know there’s a scene where Katniss and Peeta sneak away to be alone together before they head into the Quarter Quell. They pretty much just hang out, and enjoy each other’s company.

The emotional scene starts with them taking food and sneaking onto the roof of the training center where they escape life for a bit. Here’s an excerpt from the book if you need a refresher:

“No one bothers us. By late afternoon, I lie with my head on Peeta’s lap, making a crown of flowers while he fiddles with my hair, claiming he’s practicing his knots. After a while, his hands go still. ‘What?’ I ask. ‘I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,’ he says.”

How can you not SWOON after reading that?! Though that particular part is missing, the bond between Katniss and Peeta is definitely strengthened throughout this movie, and Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence‘s chemistry is really put on display. There’s a small nod to this “sneak away” scene where they lay in bed together the night before, but that’s really all we get to see before they head into the arena.

I’m sure they cut it for time (even without that scene, Catching Fire has a 2-hour-26-minute run time) but still, it would have been nice to see that all play out on screen.

Are you bummed to learn they didn’t include this scene? Or do you think it was an expendable scene and others were way more important? Let me know what you think in the comments section!

I was VERY upset that they didnt put that scene in the movie because that was one of my favorite parts of the book. I’m just hoping that they will have an exclusive scene on the dvd that has it, but other than that I LOVED THE MOVIE!!!

I disagree. The biggest mistake of ‘Catching Fire’ was not enough Donald Sutherland. ;) I’m kidding. They gave Snow more screen time than he had in the book, and I’m grateful for that.

I was a lil upset about the end when gale kept going on after he says, “Katniss, there is no district twelve.” Other then that I LOVED the movie.❤️❤️❤️

I have a feeling they might do flashback to this scene in the Mocking Jay… Peeta and Katniss are away from each other so long in this book, it might be a good way to keep him present in the next movie… Well, that’s what I hope they do anyway :) I really missed seeing this on screen. As well as the other scenes with Peeta and Katniss.
