It’s pretty hard to imagine anyone BUT Jennifer Lawrence playing the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise, but before she was cast, lots of other young stars were considered.

That’s right, back in 2011 it was announced Jen had won the highly coveted role, but there were at least 11 other actresses who had a chance at the once in a lifetime part. Some you might have previously heard about, but others who were in the mix might come as a surprise. See who was thisclose to playing Katniss by clicking through the gallery below!

1. Emma Roberts

While promoting Screan 4 back in 2011, Emma opened up about auditioning for the role of Katniss. She told MTV: "I was definitely interested in it, but it was just one of those things that didn't end up happening."

2. Jodelle Ferland

You might recognize Jodelle as Bree Tanner -- the ill-fated vampire -- from The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Apparently at one point or another she was up for the role Katniss.

3. Lyndsy Fonseca

This Nikita star could have had the role of a lifetime in The Hunger Games but it just didn't work out for her.

Wenn

4. Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse obviously didn't get cast as Katniss, but she did star in another YA adaptation -- The Host -- although, it wasn't nearly as successful as The Hunger Games.

5. Abigail Breslin

Abigail was considered for the role, but she did end up starring in another YA flick: Ender's Game.

6. Haliee Steinfeld

Speaking of Ender's Game, before she was cast as Petra, Hailee almost snagged the role of Katniss.

7. Kaya Scodelario

This British actress didn't end up with the role of Katniss (duh) but she will star in the big screen adaptation of The Maze Runner out in September 2014.

8. Emily Browning

She showed she could kick butt in Suckerpunch, but that wasn't enough to get her cast as Katniss.

9. Chloe Grace Moretz

Yep, Chloe was one of the actresses considered to play Katniss. However, she did beat out quite a few actresses to star in the Carrie remake.

10. Shailene Woodley

This one was probably the most obvious, but apparently Shailene was cool with not getting the role. She told MTV: “Yeah, I definitely auditioned. It wasn’t, like, a great audition. But I think that Jennifer Lawrence is perfect for that role. She’s so strong as a woman and one thing that I really love from her is that I love it when women live from their groin, just to say they own their woman power and she totally does."

Oh look. They’re all white. Because, of course they would never consider someone of color for the role.

In the book, Katniss is not ‘of color.’ You would know that if you bothered to read the book.

I have read the books. Thrice. By women of color I mean Hispanic/Middle Easter/Indian/African/ some non-Caucasian group. And Katniss is never described in the book. We only know she looks like Gale who has (and you would know this if you read the book) olive skin, which is used, lo and behold, to describe Hispanic/Indian/Middle Eastern/I hope you get the point now. Jennifer Lawrence is awesome, but the fact that they didn’t even look at someone of some color who make up a majority of ‘olive’ skinned people is wrong. And the fact that you are o-okay and peachy keen with that is also very very wrong.

And ‘of color’ refers to, lo and behold, everyone who is non-white. Even though Jennifer Lawrence is awesome, the fact that they didn’t even consider someone OF COLOR for the role is wrong. The fact that you don’t see the problem, however, is worse.

I have read the books. Thrice. Katniss is only every described in opposition to other characters and is said to look just like Gale who is ‘olive’ skinned i.e. of color

Have read the books. Thrice. She’s olive skinned which is mostly composed of Hispanic/Middle Eastern/Indian/do you see what I’m doing? Maybe you should learn how to read.

In the book katniss is “olive” skinned honey. And olive skinned means someone of middle eastern, north african, mediterranean, central asian or southern european heritage. I dont know about you, but that makes me think of naturally tanned women, not theses “always need sunscreen” girls. So if you ask me, youre the one who needs to go read the books again.

They say that if Jennifer hadnt been called and personally asked, and if she declined, then Saoirse Ronan would have for sure gotten the part.
Saoirse’s a great actress. But I’m not a huge fan of THG so I’m glad she didn’t get cast:)
