Age ain’t nothing but a number, right? Well, in the world of Hollywood that seems to be true! Believe it or not, sometimes when you see a mother/son or father/daughter duo on screen, the actors IRL aren’t too far apart in age. Gotta love that movie-making magic.
For instance, did you know Amy Poehler is only seven years older than her on screen daughter in Mean Girls? Yep, and they’re not the only ones who’ve used trickery to play parents to kids who were way too young for them in real life.

Adam Sandler & Andy Samberg
In the comedy That's My Boy Adam and Andy play an estranged father/son duo, despite an only 12 year age difference IRL. We guess it works though, because in the movie Adam's character was a teen when he had his son.
Amy Poehler & Rachel McAdams
In Mean Girls, Amy plays Regina George's mom, but is actually only seven years older than Rachel McAdams.
Olivia Wilde & Justin Timberlake
In the 2011 movie In Time at a certain age, people stop growing old, which would explain why Olivia plays JT's mom -- even though Justin is two years older than her.
Angelina Jolie & Colin Farrell
Angelina and Colin played a mother/son duo in Alexander even though she is only one year older than him in real life.
Mary Steenburgen & Will Ferrell
Mary plays Will's mom in the hilarious 2008 movie Stepbrothers, despite the fact she's only 14 years older than him.
Drew Barrymore & Adam Garcia
In Riding In Cars With Boys, Drew plays a character who had a baby at 15, but IRL, Adam Garcia (the actor who played the grown up version of her son) is two years older than her.
Jason Bateman & Michael Cera
These two play a hilarious father/son duo on Arrested Development, but Jason is only 19 years older than Michael. Not totally out the question, but that's kind of young to have kids, don't you think?
J.K. Simmons & Paul Rudd
J.K. plays Paul's dad in the 2009 movie I Love You, Man but IRL, he's only 14 years older than his on screen son.
Ryan Gosling & Saoirse Ronan
OK, so technically these two never actually played father and daughter, but age was the exact reason why. Ryan was cast as Saoirse's dad in The Lovely Bones, but he dropped out because with only a 14 year age difference, he didn't think it was believable.
Crispin Glover & Michael J. Fox
Marty and George McFly from Back to the Future are one of the best known on screen father/son duos, but IRL, Michael is three years older than his on screen dad.
OMG is a Mean Girls reunion going to happen?!
