When the first poster for The Fault In Our Stars was released on Wednesday, many fans were thrilled to see their first official look at the highly-anticipated book turned movie. However, the initial excitement wore off for some when they read the movie’s tagline: “One sick love story.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the story, it centers on two teenagers struggling with cancer who end up falling in love, which is why it hit the wrong chord with some. While some thought it was too dark, one person who didn’t mind it? The book’s author, John Green. In a statement on his Tumblr he said:

“I found [the tagline] dark and angry in the same way that Hazel is (at least at times) dark and angry in her humor. I mostly wanted something that said, ‘This is hopefully not going to be a gauzy, sentimental love story that romanticizes illness and further spreads the lie that the only reason sick people exist is so that healthy people can learn lessons.’ But that’s not a very good tag line. I like the tag line because it says, literally, the sick can also have love stories. Love and joy and romance are not just things reserved for the well.”

Now, the stars of the film – Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort — are also voicing their (mixed) opinions. Shailene told Entertainment Weekly, “I had a really strong response to it. It’s definitely — it’s not a tagline that I probably would have chosen by any means. But I think that there’s so many people who are so passionate about this book that there’s nothing that will ever satisfy everyone. So I think it was just up to the discretion of the marketing mavens. For me, it was — yeah, not something I would have chosen. But it seems like half the people love it and half the people don’t like it.”

On the other hand, Ansel kept his response short and sweet:

What do YOU think of the tagline? Is it too much? Or does it work with the movie? Sound off in the comments section!

Am I the only one that is weirded out by the fact that they’re playing a couple in The Fault In Our Stars and siblings in Divergent?

Read the book. Love the tagline. It reminds me of the conversations between hazel, augustus and isaac.
