Rating 10 Books Turned Teen TV Series

by: on | in Books | 8 Comments

Remember when Lauren Oliver‘s Delirium was meant to become a TV series, starring Emma Roberts, Gregg Sulkin and Daren Kagasoff, but then they decided to nix it? Yeah, that was a bummer. (Guess it’s all for the best, though, considering Emma snagged a role on American Horror Story: Coven with boyfriend-turned-fiance Evan Peters, but we digress.) Fortunately, footage from the never-before-seen pilot has made its way onto the Internet, so at least we can get a sense of what it would’ve been like.

This got us to thinking about all the other books that got the go-ahead for a teen television series (except all of the ones mentioned below went into at least a few episodes of production). And we’re rating ten of them on a win-fail basis…

Pretty Little Liars — WIN
It’s, like, the #1 show geared toward teens on TV right now. Obvious win.

The Lying Game — FAIL
Darn shame, too — we were dying to know why Thayer was such a backstabber.

The Vampire Diaries — WIN
Between the hot men and bajillion doppelgangers,
we expect plenty more from Nina Dobrev and the crew in the years to come.

Vampire Diaries

Alloy Entertainment

Privileged — FAIL
One season. ONE. That’s all the Lucy Hale show got.
Thankfully, PLL came along for her and all was not lost.

Gossip Girl — WIN
Five years worth of dramz. Safe to say it was a win.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King — FAIL
Not to be rude, but *yawn*.

Friday Night Lights — WIN
And it’s all on Netflix!

How to Rock — FAIL
Sorry, Cymphonique

The Carrie Diaries — WIN
The show was moved to the (dreaded) Friday slot,
but we’re holding out hope that Carrie Bradshaw will make it through.

Ellie Jones

The Secret Circle — FAIL
Well, at least we were introduced to Phoebe Tonkin.

*BONUS* The Hundred — TBD
We’re withholding judgment (for now) until the series premieres.
The pilot was interesting, though.

    This list is so true

  • Ashley

Yeah because honestly if it were based on how well they involved what happened in the book or books; a lot of those would fail. To give an example would be Vampire Diaries, now I love the show and it’s obviously successful, but it does not follow the books at all.

    • Lara

In my opinion TVD is better than this season of PLL

  • Courtnei

I actually liked the nine lives of chole king. Pissed it ended.

  • Sammy

I still can’t believe they cancelled The Lying Game!

  • Harriet

Is this win-or-fail based on whether it was cancelled or not? A lot of good shows have been cancelled, to be sure. And I honestly enjoyed Nine Lives of Chloe King & How to Rock. A real shame.

    • Kaitlin Cubria

Yes, based on cancellations — we were really hoping to see what happened on The Lying Game as well.

    • Mels

I liked Nine Lives of Chloe King too. There are worse shows on tv that aren’t cancelled.
