Vampire Academy Fans Start Grassroots Movement After Poor Film Reviews

"It's Twilight as directed by Mark Waters, of Mean Girls. It's an idea that might have been intriguing 15 years ago, before those movies existed."

"This attempt to capture the magic of the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises tries too hard to pack all the backstory and borrowings into one film."

These were some of the harsh critiques Vampire Academy faced after debuting — and failing — at the box office this past weekend. However, as dedicated fans of the book ourselves, it's upsetting and unfortunate that VA will always receive comparisons to Twilight despite being NOTHING alike apart from the fact that there are vampires involved.

Even more suckily — yes, we're making suckily a word here — most critics don't understand that the flick was pretty much identical to Richelle Mead's novel, which rarely happens when written words are translated onto the big screen. Thanks, Mark & Dan Waters! Fortunately, the VA Family isn't taking the poor reviews lying down…

According to Movie Pilot, the fandom's kickstarting its own worldwide grassroots marketing campaign to garner attention from those who are hesitant to see the movie based on most critics' comments. Here are some of the plans:

Please don’t be put of by the trailer. That’s how I felt initially, then I saw the movie. I don’t know what they were thinking when they put the trailer together, it didn’t truly show the movie at all. I urge you to see the movie first so you can see how great this series will be and sign the petition for the 2nd movie! https://www.change.org/petitions/preger-entertainment-give-us-va-frostbite-the-movie#share

Waiting for it to come out in Australia! But from the sounds of it, the critics have unfairly trashed a fantastic movie. I have been a fan of the series since 2008, which means that this series has been with me throughout my entire highschool experience and i truly wouldnt be the person I am today without it. Rose taught me to stand up for what I truly believe in and to fight everyday for your ultimate goal, which are both some of the most important morals a teenage girl can learn. I will always treasure VA, and to see this happening to the movie franchise of a beloved book is frankly heart-breaking :( Us fans need to fight for this movie and for this series to continue so that they can make a frostbite and fix all the little things (like advertising) that they screwed up this time around!

I have been a fan of the *Vampire Academy* series since I read the 1st book! I have been looking forward to seeing this movie every since I caught word of it being made! My son who is 23yrs. old has been wanting to read this series for awhile but, due to work hasn’t been able to.I started to tell him about the series and he told me he wanted to read it for his self. When I found out the movie was coming out in Feb. I told everybody! Including my husband, Son, and my daughter, who has loved the series as much as me! My son said he wanted to go with me to see it this weekend. After seeing the movie He words were “It Goes Hard”! Meaning the movie was Awesome! and I so agree! couldn’t believe how close to the book it was! We can’t wait for *Frostbite* to come out along with all the other movies made from the books! *Vampire Academy* Is AMAZING! Those critics that wrote bad reviews, should have been made to read the books before they were allowed to write a review! Bravo! To the Director, Writer, and Crew for the Amazing job of bring our Favorite book series to the Big Screen! The way I see it a 23 yr. old male, who hasn’t read the books. Loved the movie so much, He has been telling all his friends they need to see this movie, and by the way. He liked the *Twilight* books but, didn’t really get into the movies. I’m a 46 yr. old female and when we seen the movie this weekend our theater was full of people of all ages, and from what I could tell Everyone liked the movie and I heard several people say “Oh I can’t wait for *Frostbite*! As a fan, I have been telling everyone go watch *Vampire Academy* you won’t be sorry! :) I want to see *Frostbite* along with all the other books made into movies! :)

For us hardcore fan’s that have been waiting years for a big screen adaptation we are not about to let it be passed over! The first book wasn’t my favorite in the series but it is the introduction to an amazing story and world! The movie was very close to the book and they will only get better and better if we can push through to get a sequel made!

  • Felicia

I actually loved all the books and am addicted to them and I loved how close the movie was to the books that never happens I was hesitant at first because that never happens but it was way good and deserves a chance to be seen :)

I’ve read all the books in the VA series and honestly, the movie just doesn’t appeal to me as in the trailer, it looks way more humorous than the books’ tone. May just be me or just how the trailer portrayed it, but it’s one downside to the movie that has made me not see it.

Although the trailer portrays it as a comedy it actually is still very serious. It’s funny because Rose is always sassy which is a huge part of the books. Please don’t let the trailer scare you, I’ve been a fan for years and read all the books and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie

  • martha

I honestly did not like the movie a lot, it seemed to me like an episode of a tv drama instead of a movie. Also the selection of actors was not so good especially for Dimitri.

  • Laura

I read the first book and was not very impressed. I mean, it’s just another run-of-the mill YA novel churned out to bank on teenaged girls’ fantasies. Nothing special, though I’ve definitely read worse. I thought about maybe going to see the movie, but the commercials seemed to promote it as another terrible teen drama drowning in pop culture references. So, I passed on it. I feel like the marketing wasn’t targeted toward a wide enough audience. Perhaps if the marketing strategy wasn’t so prom-drama-with-vampires, then more people would be intrigued enough to see it.

I liked VA I never read the book, but it was a great movie. It was nothing like Twilight to me. For one twilight is more drama and romance. VA is comedy, action, and romance and that’s what I like to see. To me VA is two thumbs up and I hope that they come out with a sequel.

  • Caroline

Saw it the first time last Thurs – pre-screening tickets won from Weinstein Company (yay!)
    Thoughts? Really liked it.

Saw it again tonight (had to pay and support the movie!!!) Thoughts? LOVED IT!

I didn’t think it was possible to like a movie more the second time, but I totally did!!!

Thank you so much for posting about the VA Family’s mission to spread the word about how good the movie is. We face an epic battle against stereotypes and the trend of thinking it’s cool to be sick of vampires. The Vampire Academy story is so intelligent, emotional, action-packed, and funny. Will you please share a link to the new Vampire Academy music video on the main page? All of us fans think it should have been the original trailer. It gives us chills, gives us feels, and is likely to make almost any viewer interested in checking out the movie! Not sure I can post a link, but search Vampire Academy Music Video on YouTube, and it’ll be right there. Thank you!

I saw this movie because what I had wanted to see was sold out: and boy am I glad that I did. I’ve never read he books, but reading fans’ comments it seems like I’d love the books as much as I loved this film. I urge everybody to go and see this: I definitely don’t fit the teen vampire movie demographic, but I’m hooked now! Great movie, and great to see fans taking ownership of the film.

I absolutely love the books and i loved the movie. I think they did an awesome job turning the book in a motion picture. I dont think they realize us VA fans WONT back do

They make this movie look horrible.

  • Despair

The books are amazing and the movie for being the first one out it was good but I felt, this is just my opinion, like they made Rose seem weak at first but yet they did capture the recklessness from her and they capture her “badass” and sassyness that she have. Other than that the movie was great and I felt it was good people need to give it a chance SPECIALLY those h=who haven’t read the books. My 2 sisters loved it and same as my mom and they haven’t even read the books so seriously if you going to criticizes a movie and comparing to Twilight that was a piece of crap? well let me just say that if you going to mess with the VA family then you have to deal with absolutely and every single one of us.

    • VA_Life

      My thoughts exactly!

  • Stephanie

Absolutely LOVED this amazing movie! As a freakishly huge fan of the book series I was not disapoin

  • Anny Farias

This movie is Amazing! Was ao well transcript from the pages of the book to the big screen, wich is hard to find this days when it comes to books adaptations, and i can tell that one was great to see it,an awesome movie that stays true to the book and entertains the public even if is not a fan of the series, much comedy, much fantasy in a way never seen before with a new mythology, and such action, and a little romance, this film is for all kind! One of the bests adaptations i’ve seen, definitly gona see it again and again,it’s woth it!

  • Alexa

This movie is the BEST book to film adaptation I have ever seen!! It’s not supposed to be ANYTHING like Twilight, so I have no idea why it’s being compared to it. It’s in a league all its own. It’s got gossip of course and drama, but it’s also about how love and friendship cannot be bound by age or social class. It’s about a sarcastic, sassy, sexy badass who saves her best friend and falls in love/finds herself while trying. I bet you that all of those horrible reviews were written by uninformed critics who are UNFAMILIAR with the series. Any who I’m praying Frostbite will be put into production because this fan girl is extremely pleased with the outcome. Thanks Mark and Dan Waters! You have restored my faith in Hollywood.

I love this movie!! It s AWESOME!! Stays true to the book but also had some modern day quips. The cast each literally owned their characters, something not often done by an entire cast!!! Each of us in the VAfamily (as we are now known) have been involved in the filn since Richelle Mead first announced the offer. It saddens me that the critics are so harsh, but we must forgive them considering all they do is watch movies… perhaps if one of them actually picked up a copy of the book, they might look at our baby with new eyes. Someone somewhere in our family started the kickoff fanbased advertising campaign and so fareveryone who has seen it has jumped on e joining in promoting our baby thank you for helping us get one step closer to Frostbite!!!!
