When choosing a college, one must obviously look at the courses available in the curriculum. At a majority of institutions, there will be the usual maths and sciences and histories, yadda yadda yadda. However, on the rare occasion, ridiculously fun classes like these arise:

1. The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media (Skidmore College) — “In this special topics course, explore core issues of intersectionality theory, looking at race, class and gender, as well as taking a feminist critique of media, using Miley as a lens through which to explore sociological thinking about identity, entertainment, media and fame.”

2. Zombies in Popular Media (Columbia College Chicago) — “This course explores the history, significance and representation of the zombie as a figure in horror and fantasy texts.”

3. “Oh, Look, a Chicken!” Embracing Distraction as a Way of Knowing (Belmont University) — “This course will pursue ways of knowing through embracing [little ants, carrying a morsel of food across the table] what it means to be a distracted [I could sure enjoy a peanut butter sandwich right now] learner as well as [OMG -- I get to go to the beach this summer] developing an awareness [I need to trim my fingernails] of one’s senses. The instructor teaches in the school of music, [do I hear water dripping?] so there will be an element related to that woven [spiders are amazing] into the course. [Oh, it's the fish tank behind me] Those registering for this section may even learn to juggle [I'll be right down, I just have to finish this... what was I working on?].”

4. Elvish as a Second Language (University of Wisconsin, Madison) — “In an increasingly diverse world, having a bilingual education grows ever more important. It’s fortunate, then, that the UW-Madison community offers expertise in a wide variety of languages — Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Elvish… That’s right, Elvish — the language of elves, those magical and mythical creatures from ancient folklore.” (And The Lord of the Rings!)

5. The Strategy of StarCraft (University of California, Berkeley) — “This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game StarCraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted.”

6. GaGa for Gaga: Sex, Gender, and Identity (University of Virginia) — “Students analyze how the musician pushes social boundaries with her work.”

7. The Science Of Superheroes (University of California, Irvine) — “In this seminar, we discuss the science (or lack of science) behind many of the most famous superheroes. Even more amazing, we will discuss what kind of superheroes might be imagined using our current scientific understanding.”

8. David Beckham Studies (Staffordshire University) — Examines “the rise of football (or soccer in the US) from its folk origins in the 17th century to the central place it occupies in British culture. We do have to concede that Beckham occupies a lot of our attention today. He’s the object of a great many fantasies.”

9. Introduction to Turntablism — (Oberlin Experimental College) “Here is your chance to learn the basics behind the instrument of the future! In this class we will survey everything a beginning DJ needs to know; turntablism, sampling, beatmatching, laptop DJing and, of course, how to scratch.”

10. The Unbearable Whiteness of Barbie (Occidental College) — Explores ways in “which scientific racism has been put to use in the making of Barbie [and] to an interpretation of the film The Matrix as a Marxist critique of capitalism.”
