As we learned from our interview with Fifth Harmony, who’s also involved with the campaign, See The Real Me’s main goal is to empower young girls never to let their insecurities slow them down.
In addition to recording a personal video that addresses the struggles she’s still going through today, Demi was nice enough to exclusively talk to us about what the campaign means to her and tons more! From her upcoming album (including a collab with Nick Jonas) and tour, which kicks off in Baltimore on September 6 (!!) to her ever-changing hair and future tattoos, nothing was off limits!

Why did you want to get involved with the See The Real Me campaign in the first place?
"I wanted to get involved because I love what See The Real Me does for opening up the minds of young women [and] showing the world who they really are. In my video I was able to show people who I really am. I really liked being able to show young women, ‘hey, I’m a pop star but I don’t always have my stuff together, but here I am right now. This is who I really am.’ I just want to encourage that confidence for other girls."Photo: Instagram
And you've been super open about showing the world the true you, so how would you encourage girls to do the same as they head back to school?
"My advice for people that are having some worries or insecurities about going back to school is that it’s important to stay true to who you are. There’s a saying, ‘It’s always better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you’re not.’ And I really love that because when you’re authentic there’s nothing people can take away from you."Photo: Instagram
How do you overcome your insecurities?
"Everyone has insecurities; It’s just a part of life. I know for me, personally, in order to move past my insecurities I have to work on myself every single day. With that being said I am always trying to better myself and work on my spirituality, my mind and my physical health and hopefully people can do the same thing for themselves."Photo: Instagram
Your world tour is coming up soon! How do you think this tour will be different than your all-female Neon Lights tour?
"I don’t think having guys on this tour is going to change things that much. At the end of the day, whether you’re a female or male, all that matters is that we’re inspiring people on this tour. So MKTO is very excited and I’m excited to have them, as well! It’ll be great!"Photo: Instagram
What can fans who've gotten tickets expect from the shows?
"I haven’t really put the entire show together yet to where we can talk about it, but I will say that we’re changing some things up! It’s happening very soon! Get excited!"Photo: Instagram
You've been teasing new music lately, so what can you tell us about your upcoming album? Is it coming sooner than we think?
"There’s definitely a different sound to my songs because I like to evolve and make sure everything I do has my audience on their toes. I want to show people how far I’ve come musically and I feel like the best way to show them is through my new music. I don’t know exactly how fast they think it’s coming, but I am working on it at a very fast pace and we’ll see when it gets released. Who knows!"Photo: Instagram
And what about your duet with Nick Jonas?
Nick and I have been really, really amazing friends for years and years now so when he came to me and told me he had a song he wanted me to do with him I was like, ‘absolutely!’ So we recorded the song together, it’s called “Avalanche,” and it’ll be off his new album coming out. I don’t know when that is, though."Photo: WENN
We can't wait! What's the story behind the song?
"Well, since it’s his song I don’t want to step on any toes! I don’t know how much he’s told the press about what it’s about, but with Nick’s music I’m excited about all of it. I can’t wait for people to hear it!"Photo: Fox
Have you had any crazy fan moments recently?
"It’s hard to say because all of my fan moments are meaningful to me. They all mean something to me. They all stand out. I just got back from New York and I had a lot of incredible fans show their support there, so that was amazing."Photo: Instagram
We always see them hold up signs in the audience. Can you remember any funny ones?
"I don’t know! I’ve had some many! I can’t even think of one right now. There are so many funny random ones."Photo: Instagram
We love your ever-changing hair! Is there something you'd never do to it?
"Probably not. I literally will do anything with my hair! It’s just hair – you can grow it back!"Photo: Instagram
Is there a hairstyle you've had that you look back on and regret?
"Yeah, sometimes I look back on the red hair I did, when I had the dark red hair, that I’m like, ‘oh my god what was I thinking?’"Photo: Instagram
Your tattoos are awesome, but it seems like you've slowed down on getting more lately. Any plans for future tattoos?
"I don’t know. If I ever want to get a new tattoo then I will. I never stop myself. I just think I have a lot right now and I don’t really want to add too many to the collection."Photo: Instagram
Is there a song right now that you’re obsessed with that you’d love to cover?
"Sam Smith, “Stay With Me.” I love that song!"Photo: Instagram
What's the main thing you want people to know about Demi Lovato the person, not Demi Lovato the pop star?
"I would want people to know that there’s nothing I feel can get in my way. I will always try to fight hard for the things I believe in, some of which is trying to help a younger demographic find their confidence earlier in life so they cannot fold under society’s image of what they believe beauty is. I just want people to know that I stand for women empowerment and I will always stand up for what I believe in."Photo: Instagram
