10 Romantic YA Quotes That Teens Would NEVER Say in Real Life

by: on | in Books | No Comments

Guys, we’ve got a confession to make: We are huge suckers for YA romances. They’re adorable, they give us all the feels and they even make us crush on the characters. But as much as we love reading about these juicy romances, we have to admit that most of the dialogues are, well… unrealistic.

In practically every encounter between YA couples, there’s always flawless dialogue with a couple of cute metaphors sprinkled on top. The awkward moments rarely ever happen and the transition from friends (or strangers) to lovers is usually super quick and effortless. But in real life, that’s just not how things work, because real-life interactions between couples aren’t always so swoon-worthy. Check out these 10 over-the-top romantic quotes that teens would never actually say to each other in real life:

Augustus' quote from The Fault in Our Stars

QUOTE: "It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you."

This line is super romantic, but let's face it: Getting your heart broken by your crush is actually tough and humiliating. We doubt that anyone would feel honored to go through something like that.

Edward's quote from New Moon

QUOTE: "And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason, for anything."

Edward had a lot of gems, but this one's one takes the cake. Unless someone is actually putting on a performance for an audience, this line is, quite simply, WAY over the top. We honestly can't see how anyone can whip up a phrase like this on the fly during a normal conversation.

Jace's quote from City of Glass

QUOTE: "All night I've watched you sleeping, watched the moonlight come and go, casting its shadows across your face in black and white. I've never seen anything more beautiful."

Stalkerish tendencies might be romantic in YA books, but in real life, not so much. If we were to tell anyone this exact same phrase, we're pretty sure they'd freak out and run.

Aaron's quote from Unravel Me

QUOTE: "I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with. The one you take into your arms and into your bed and into the private world you keep trapped in your head. I want to be that kind of friend. The one who will memorize the things you say as well as the shape of your lips when you say them. I want to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of your body."

Is it just us, or does this sound like something that could be performed at a poetry cafe? Don't get us wrong, it's definitely romantic. But still, it's a little over-the-top.

Adrian's quote from The Golden Lily

QUOTE: "You are the most beautiful creature I have ever seen walking this earth. And you don't even know it. You have no clue how beautiful you are or how brightly you shine."

This line gives us all the feels (and we'll admit that it's one of our faves), but if anyone said this in real life it would sound like they stole it from a book or a romance movie.

Kaleb's quote from The Summer of Me and You

QUOTE: "I realized someone else might tell you you're pretty. I'd do anything to keep you away from that person."

This is so extreme and just downright creepy. In fact, it sounds like something an insecure and insanely jealous person would say... And that's not very romantic.

Augustus' other quote from The Fault in Our Stars

QUOTE: "I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you."

Umm... Okay, at this point it sounds like Gus is reciting prose from a famous poet. It's sweet, yes, but no teen actually talks like that.

Hector's quote from The Crown of Embers

QUOTE: "I love you the way a drowning man loves air. And it would destroy me to have you just a little."

This character is basically saying, "You are my reason for living." Or rather, "I love you so much that I want to crawl inside of you and live there." But either way, it sounds extremely dramatic and way too desperate.

Will's quote from Angelfire

QUOTE: "Please understand that no matter what I am or what has happened in the past, I am yours. I am devoted to you above all else, including my own life."

Yikes. That's some pretty heavy stuff. It sounds like something a servant would say to their master to prove their loyalty.

Noah's quote from The Evolution of Mara Deyer

QUOTE: "You can't hurt me the way you think you can. But even if you could? I would rather die with the taste of you on my tongue than live and never touch you again. I'm in love with you."

Whoa! Talk about dramatic. It sounds really sweet, but at the same time, it's so extreme. No one — we repeat, NO ONE — would actually say this in real life.
