The holidays mark what many refer to as “the most wonderful time of the year” — but that saying isn’t so for everyone, especially Disney Channel alum Tiffany Thornton and her family.
This time last year, the 30-year-old former star of Sonny with a Chance lost her best friend, Brittany Blanton, and her husband, Chris Carney — on two separate occasions. Both instances are tragic enough all on their own, so the fact that they were practically hours apart is all the more heartbreaking.
To commemorate the upcoming anniversary of Chris’ death, December 4, she posted the following Instagram, with the most heart-wrenching caption:
“As we leave Branson and head back to Hot Springs I can’t help but think of my husband and how much I wish he was still here,” she began. “On Sunday it will be an entire year that Chris has spent in Heaven. A year since I heard his voice in person, since his parents hugged him, since I heard the news that collapsed me to the floor. A year since he asked his brother to go hunting with him or asked to golf on a beautiful day, a year since he kissed his boys goodnight and told them how blessed he was to be their daddy.”
“My heart still has a hole in it,” she continued to say, regarding the father of her two children, sons Kenneth and Bentley. “And I know Chris’s family aches for him too. And his friends. This pain of not having him near will always be with me. My heart is nowhere near ready to move on with my life and I’m ok with that. I am still madly in love with my imperfect soulmate and I have no idea how long that takes to change, but I can tell you nearly a year later that it hasn’t changed at all yet.”
To cap everything off, she said, “I sometimes reach out for him while I’m driving, crying out and wondering why he isn’t still sitting next to me. One day God will give me the answers. Until then I’ll just take it one prayer at a time. Please keep Chris’s family in your prayers during the holidays. It’s a tough time for them and for the boys and I. And please know that I’m so grateful for each and every one of you who has reached out and who has been praying since Christopher passed. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.”
Did you read that? She’s still “madly in love” with him. UGH.
Sadly, all of these female celebrities know what it’s like to lose her significant other:
Glee fans everywhere were shocked and heartbroken when Cory Monteith was found dead from a drug overdose at the age of 31 back in July 2013. While all of the actor's friends, family and fans mourned his passing, perhaps nobody felt the loss like his longtime girlfriend, Lea Michele. The actress has since spoken out about Cory's death multiple times, and even penned a tune on her Louder album dedicated to his death.
A year after Cory Monteith's tragic passing, another Glee star suffered a devastating loss. Becca Tobin's boyfriend Matt Bendik was found dead in his Philadelphia hotel room. His cause of death was not immediately known, which most likely contributed to the blonde's heartbreak. "Thank you all for the love and support," Becca wrote about a month later. "Matt was the most extraordinary man I knew and he will live in my heart forever." So sad!
Just days after her best friend was killed in a car accident this past December, the former Sonny With a Chance star learned that her husband and father of two young sons had also died in a vehicle crash. There are clearly no words to express the pain and suffering the 30-year-old actress star dealt with, as she still had to put on a brave face and give her children a good Christmas. Tiffany now posts pictures of her hubby frequently, and credits her strong relationship with god for helping get her through this difficult time.
Many people know about the model's long-term relationship with Orlando Bloom, but not a lot are aware of an equally as important romance — the one she had with childhood sweetheart, Christopher Middlebrook. Miranda and Chris were dating for two years before he sadly was killed in a car accident.
We had been dating for two years, and I had just left Gunnedah and moved to Brisbane when he was killed instantly in a car accident and all of a sudden it felt as though my world had fallen apart," she wrote in her book, Treasure Yourself.
The Aussie beauty then revealed that she promised she'd name her first child after him "in some way," which she did with her son, Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom.
"Chris’ death taught me that the people who touch your life are always with you. It taught me that I have the choice to be grateful for the time I had with him instead of dwelling on losing him."
Steve Irwin, who was lovingly known as "The Crocodile Hunter," was tragically killed in a snorkeling accident in 2006, leaving behind his wife and two young children. Following his death, Terri Irwin vowed to "make Australia Zoo bigger" and continue supporting wildlife funding in her deceased husband's name.
After bravely battling throat cancer for almost 17 years, René Angélil, Celine's husband of 21 years, passed away from the disease on January 14, 2016. She expressed her appreciation for the outpouring of love and support on her official website:
"We thank from the bottom of our heart all the people who have expressed their love for René during these trying times. Your testimony and your support helped us, more than you can imagine to take this step and say our farewells. Thank you also to the Government of Quebec for holding a national funeral, as well as to the many individuals and organizations who worked to provide a final tribute to the height of the man he was.
John Dineen, the 34-year-old fiance of Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery, died from a rare form of cancer at the end of 2015. The actress eulogized her love at his funeral with a beautiful and speech that remembered him as her "hero."
"I was honored to know John. To love him and be loved by him," The Irish Times reported she said. "He was my friend, my king, my hero, my everything. We celebrate him, we honor him and we will miss him."
