16 Amazing Music Videos That Blew Your Mind (in a Good Way) in 2016

by: on | in Music | No Comments

Through all the ups and downs of 2016, there is one thing that has always had our back: music. Pop, rock, soul, rap, and R&B have all been able to lift our spirits when we’re down and keep the good times rollin’ when we’re feeling on top of the world. You can say what you want about how crappy this year has been (see: me at the beginning of 2016 v. me at the end of 2016… it’s real), but you cannot deny that there has been some really effing phenomenal music that has come out in the past 365ish days.

To make things even more epic, all of our fave songs of the also had music videos released to compliment the awesomeness of the tune itself. Teen.com is breaking down our fave 16 music videos of ’16, so check out the gallery below to see if your fave made the cut!

'Side to Side' by Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj

Watch it here!

2016 was Ari's year. Her album Dangerous Woman was FILLED with jams and basically all of her music videos were absolute fire. This MV's workout concept was A+, and with the help of Nicki, "Side to Side" stood out as THE. BEST. she's ever done

'Work from Home' by Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla $ign

Watch it here!

Given the recent 5H drama, it's hard to look back at their music videos and not wonder what kind of tensions were going on behind the scenes. Despite all that, the vid for "Work From Home" is EPIC and the most-watched music video of 2016, according to YouTube. Somehow, the girls also make tool belts look like a must-buy accessory, which adds a whole new level of impressiveness to their already amazing music video.

'Hands to Myself' by Selena Gomez

Watch it here!

Some epic music videos have been filmed in bathtubs: Rihanna's "Stay," Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off," Britney Spears' "Everytime" and now — Selena joins the club.

With the help of super-sexy model Christopher Mason, we have a feeling this music video made the brunette beauty's exes (Justin Bieber in particular) VERY jealous.

'History' by One Direction

Watch it here!

2016 may have seemed painfully 1D-free, but One Direction's #emotional goodbye music video in mid-January started off the year on a bittersweet note. We mean, the video is AWESOME: personal recordings of the boys hanging out backstage (some even from the ZAYN days... drama!) + clips of the cuties singing, dancing and goofing around. But if you can get through the entire video without shedding a tear, we tip our hats off to you... that's a serious accomplishment.

'Toothbrush' by DNCE

Watch it here!

Just being able to stare at Joe Jonas's beautiful face for about four minutes could probably snag DNCE's music video a spot on this list, but what really sealed the deal is Ashley Graham's appearance as the middle Jonas brother's love interest. A "plus size" lingerie model (she hates that word and TBH, so do we), the video has received a ton of recognition for sending a body-positive message to viewers. We're all about loving the skin your in and so happy to here that DNCE is, too!

'Shout Out to My Ex' by Little Mix

Watch it here!

After LM's savage Zayn Malik diss track dropped in October, fans could NOT wait to see the accompanying music video. And guess what? It certainly did not disappoint! There was a quick glimpse of a Zayn lookalike (hitchhiking on the side of the road) but most of the single-and-loving-it anthem was spent watching the girls living freely and enjoying life. They all look GREAT, sound great and you can tell they all feel great too, making the music video an all-around empowering jam.

'Close' by Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo

Watch it here!

We didn't want to start a rivalry between the two JoBros who came out with vids this year, so we had to include the younger Jonas on our list, too! JK... the collaboration with Tove Lo totally earned its spot. There is some seriously cool choreography in this video as Nick and Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson (AKA Tove Lo)'s bodies seem to be magnetically repelling the other. Y'all know that the Kingdom star can act, so it's a pretty great performance to watch!

'Pillowtalk' by Zayn

Watch it here!

After Zayn upped and left 1D, we couldn't help but get excited/nervous to see what his "real music" would sound like, and what his new music videos would look like. The "Pillowtalk" video was not only artistic and colorful but also featured the beautiful Gigi Hadid (Zayn's GF). The two spend majority of the 3+ minute music video making out. Let's just say... it's not too boring to watch!

'Hold Up' by Beyonce

Watch it here!

Beyonce's visual album Lemonade seriously rocked the world when it debuted on April 23rd. While basically every single music video was a gem, "Hold Up" was a stand out for sure — you get your revenge on your ex, girl!!

'Company' by Justin Bieber

Watch it here!

Justin's Purpose album may have come out in 2015, but he held out on us with the "Company" music video until mid-2016!

About the video, the "What Do You Mean" singer said in a statement, "Personally, I love this video because it's an honest look at my journey. The process of putting together this album and this tour — surrounded by people I love to be with — has been really special. I'm proud of it, it's been a lot of fun and lot of hard work, and I think that really shows in video." It's real, it's raw and you will hear no complaints from us about a shirtless Biebs.

'Work' by Rihanna ft. Drake

Watch it here!

Whenever RiRi and Drake get together, it's pure magic. One of the longer music videos on this list, Rihanna's "Work" is actually kind of two separate vids... The song plays once with a scene of a raunchy dance party inside of a Jerk Restaurant (a shout out to the singer's roots), then the song repeats as the muscial duo performs in a room with SEXY lighting and some cuddly dance moves. Ugh, kind of just makes us wish those two crazy kids could make it work!

'The Greatest' by Sia

Watch it here!

Sia's music videos are always thought provoking and this one is no different. Maddie Ziegler stars in another one of the "Cheap Thrills" hit maker's vids and it actually has a very touching inspiration. The video is a tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting — the massacre that happened at a gay nightclub last summer.

'Formation' by Beyonce

Watch it here!

As the lead single of Lemonade, this music video was definitely one of the best of the year. Whenever Beyonce tries anything, she kills it. "Formation" has an old-timey and slightly eerie vibe, and the cameo from the adorable Blue Ivy Carter seriously just took the whole video to a new level.

Photo: Columbia Records

'Closer' by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey

Watch it here!

Nick and Tove were Close, but The Chainsmokers and Halsey got Closer with their steamysteamysteamy music video. If you watched their MTV VMA performance, then you know that Andrew Taggart and Halsey really get into character when they sing their song and this music vid is no different.

Photo: Columbia Records

'Famous' by Kanye West

Watch it here!

TBH this music video would be boring AF if it weren't for all the crazy drama it caused. Yeezy putting NSFW wax sculptures of stars like Kaitlyn Jenner, Amber Rose, Rihanna... and Taylor Swift (of course, Kanye simply cannot just leave that girl alone!) caused a mega uproar. Say what you want about the video itself because no matter what it's probably going to go down in history.

Photo: Def Jam Recordings

'This is What You Came For' by Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna

Watch it here!

RiRi and Calvin's collaboration vid is actually YouTube's second most watched music video of the year. While basically the whole thing is just Rihanna singing and dancing, it's the added visual elements that make this it super spectacular. It's definitely worth the watch (if you haven't done so by now!). Unlike in the song, which Calvin admitted had some secret Taylor Swift vocals, doesn't look like the "Bad Blood" singer had anything to do with the music video!
