8 Young, Straight Male Celebrities Who Are Allies of the LGBTQ+ Community

by: on | in Celebrities | No Comments

Celebrity support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer rights is basically assumed by this point. In fact, if any star says or does something at all homophobic or transphobic, they go immediately onto our BOYCOTT list (sorry not sorry, Grier brothers). However vocal a famous guy or gal can be about supporting LGBTQ+ rights (and simply speaking about these issues IS half the battle), it’s also V important for them to put their money where their mouth is. Ya feel?

Right now, the protections of our queer brothers and sisters are under attack and we need the help of our famous allies more than ever. We can all be a part of making a positive change, but celebrities’ support in the pro-LGBT cause could make all the difference. Check out the eight young male celebs (who all are, as far as we know, straight) who have publicly donated to, supported or participated in LGBT projects, campaigns and organizations.

Josh Hutcherson

Josh is a huge advocate for LGBT rights, participating in organizations like Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and The Trevor Project; he even started an org called Straight But Not Narrow! The program actually works as a kind of "training program," teaching young adults to be better allies to their queer peers. Iconic!

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel used his Harry Potter fame to get involved with a lot of different philanthropic causes, but one he's obviously very passionate is the gay rights movement.

Along with his work for The Trevor Project, an organization aimed at preventing suicide among LGBT youth, he's also donated his time and money to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and spoken out in favor of LGBT equality several times. It should be noted that he even won The Trevor Project's hero award in 2011! Harry Potter was a fictional hero, but Dan is one IRL.

Joe Jonas

Joe has lent his time and energy to promote Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and The Trevor Project, as well as participated in the It Gets Better project.

NIck Jonas

Despite constantly being criticized for "queerbaiting" (basc pandering to the gay community to make more $$$), Nick does have an honest interest in helping LGBT people. Along with his ~controversial~ decision to speak at a memorial for those murdered at Pulse nightclub, he's donated to the TJ Martell Foundation and Elton John AIDS Foundation, both of which target the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Darren Criss

After Darren played a gay young man on Fox's Glee, many were surprised to learn that he actually isn't queer himself! Although he's straight, he is still very active in the LGBT community, working with the Elton John's AIDS Foundation, the Human Rights Campaign, The Trevor Project and The Family Equality Council, which is an org connecting, supporting and representing LGBT adults who are interested in adopting children, particularly when it comes to legal policies that make it more difficult for queer folk to start families.

Avan Jogia

We mentioned already that John Hutcherson started the Straight But Not Narrow campaign, but what we haven't said is that Zoey Deutch's ex-boyfriend was a co-founder of the program, too!

Zac Efron

Zac Efron has participated in The Trevor Project and voiced his support for the LGBT on several occasions, including one time where he donned a cute shirt reading, "Some dudes marry dudes. Get over it," which was created for the FckH8 campaign. Zac, we love you!

Leon Bridges

This singer-songwriter is a major supporter of GLAAD, as well.
