6 Popular Female Artists Who Lost a Major Music Award to Their Famous Ex

by: on | in Celebrities | No Comments

If there’s one thing that should deter everyone from wanting to be a celebrity, it’s the prospect of dating in the public eye. Getting constantly asked about relationships is only one of many struggles that celebs have to deal with — they’re also stuck with the responsibility of announcing their breakups to avoid fan confusion and then there’s always the risk of awkwardly running into a former flame at a flashy Hollywood party. And if you thought a run-in is awk, imagine being nominated for the same award as an ex… and then having THEM win! Even if you’re not petty AF, that’s gotta hurt.

Losing sucks. It sucks even more when you lose to someone you have a ~history~ with. So for these six female artists, it must have been pretty effing awful missing out on a major music award to their celeb ex.

Selena Gomez

The saga that is this Disney star's relaysh with Justin Bieber continued into 2016 when she lost two awards to her ex-boo — one Billboard Music Award and one Teen Choice Award. Technically, she didn't lose the BBMA... her fans did! — JB was voted for having the Best Fan Army.

At the TCAs, however, you may have thought her hand was STACKED considering she had two tracks ("We Don't Talk Anymore" and "Same Old Love") nominated for Choice Breakup Song. Unfortunately, The Biebs' "Love Yourself" got the W over Sel's TWO tunes.

Taylor Swift

One Direction might constantly lose to TayTay when it comes to Billboard Music Awards, but she's suffered a few losses at the group's hand, too.

Just in case you've been living under a rock for the past four years, the "New Romantics" songstress dated Harry Styles briefly in late 2012. Soon thereafter, the boys won for Choice Summer Tour at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, which the former country crooner was also nominated for.

The award-show gods gave the former lovebirds some time to cool off before putting them both up for the 2015 American Music Award Artist of the Year category, which Harry and his bandmates took home.

Camila Cabello

No one is really sure the exact day that Camila and 5 Seconds of Summer's Michael Clifford broke up... because the two never actually confirmed their relationship in the first place! The romance was a bit more than just rumors though — considering an iCloud hack that showed some ~naughty~ text messages that the two had exchanged... selfies and all!

The Aussie and his band won the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards for Song of the Summer with their banger "She's Kinda Hot" (instead of 5H's "Worth It"). One year later, their Sounds Live Feels Live tour beat out the 7/27 World Tour for Choice Summer Tour at the Teen Choice Awards, too!

Miley Cyrus

It's hard to remember a time before Miley and Liam Hemsworth were a thing but way, way back during the "We Can't Stop" singer's Hannah Montana days, she was the queen of Disney Channel... and Nick Jonas was the king. The pair split in 2007, making her 2008 Teen Choice Awards double loss to the Jonas Brothers a little awk, to say the least.

The boys' jam "When You Look Me in the Eyes" beat "See You Again" in the Choice Music: Single category AND "Burnin' Up" got more love than "7 Things," which is V uncomfortable considering she wrote the darn tune about NJ!

Our girl RiRi lost to her abusive jerk of an ex at the 2012 VMAs in the Best Choreography category. That said, Chris Brown got a big L at the 2012 American Music Awards when Rihanna snagged a win for Favorite Soul/R&B Album.

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding and One Direction dude Niall Horan went on a few dates in 2013 before reports of their split hit the Internet. The next year, 1D rocked the Brit Awards with its "Best Song Ever" win for Best British Video, over EG's vid for "Burn."

In 2016, the 30-year-old also lost the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance category to her rumored ex Ed Sheeran. However, since she firmly states that she and the "Thinking Out Loud" crooner were nothing more than friends, it's up to you to decide if that example still counts!
