Why Halsey Chose Lauren Jauregui to Be a Part of a Trailblazing LGBTQ Love Song

Lauren Jauregui‘s decision to come out as bisexual at the end of last year made major waves, but it was definitely not the first time a young female singer was open about liking both men and women. Ashley Frangipane, better known as Halsey to most, is another openly bi crooner who constantly fights for equality for all. While the 22-year-old has always been proud of her sexuality, her songs often stuck to classic heterosexual storylines, or slightly ~mysterious~ themes that didn’t specify gender. For her upcoming album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, however, the “Now or Never” singer decided to do something that’s basically “unheard of” in mainstream pop music — a LGBTQ+ love song from the female perspective.

While Halsey knew “Strangers” would be a groundbreaking track, she felt that “something wasn’t right [and] something was not believable.” And that’s where the 20-year-old came in.

The New Jersey native explained on Zach Sang’s radio show, “I was thinking to myself, ‘If I want this song to be believable it needs to be real. So I’m not going to put a girl on this song to sing who is straight. I’m just not going to do it.’ So I reached out to Lauren, she came in and cut the vocal and it sounds awesome. Our voices sound really cool together because we both have really raspy voices. Mine is a little more delicate than hers. Hers is really powerful and big and raspy and mine is light and raspy.”

The ladies’ duet will tell the story of two women meeting and basically falling in love at first site.

“I just love that Lauren and I are two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBT community,” Halsey continued. “It’s rare to see it from a girl’s perspective.”

We cannot wait to hear the song when HFK comes out on June 2!

Lauren is just one famous girl-group member who came out as bisexual:

Lauren Jauregui

After constantly facing questions about her sexual orientation, this Fifth Harmony singer decided to come out in an open letter to Donald Trump back in November. In the note, published on Billboard.com, she referred to herself as a "bisexual Cuban-American woman," adding that she's "so proud of" of her sexuality.

We're so proud of her, too, and happy that she finally felt comfortable enough to speak her truth to the world. We love you, Laur!

Back in 2009, Fergie dropped jaws when she revealed that she'd "experimented" with women "but never had a steady girlfriend," to The Sun. Later, when questioned further about her sexuality, the Black Eyed Peas singer said she'd actually been very open about her bisexuality all along.

"Go back four or five years, people, and you'll see the same answer," she said. "I've had a lot of fun with women, and I'm not ashamed of it. The problem is that I also love a well-endowed man. But just because I enjoy women doesn’t mean I'm allowed to have affairs in my relationship. I learned through talking with my therapist that it is still cheating even if it's with girls, so there is a rule there."

YEP — still cheating if you hook up with someone else, no matter what their gender is!

Melanie Brown

Mel B from The Spice Girls just filed for divorce from her husband of the past ten years, and now that she's back on the market both men and women will be trying to sweep Scary Spice off of her feet!

The pop diva has admitted to being in serious relationships with women, telling The Guardian, "I had a girlfriend. So what? I did have a four-year relationship with a woman... People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who's in my bed."

Keep doing you, girl!

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan is best known for her acting credits — particularly her role on the TV show Westworld, but also her movies like Thirteen and Across The Universe. That said, acting isn't her only talent!

Last year, she formed a band with Zach Villa called Rebel and a Basketcase. Despite the fact that the 29-year-old beauty has only publicly been in relationships with men like Marilyn Manson and Jamie Bell, she revealed her sexuality via Twitter in 2011.

Casually, she wrote, "I myself am bisexual and have always 'joked' about [Miley Cyrus] giving me gay vibes. Not a bad thing! Just an observation." Seems her gay-dar was on-point, because MiCy is pansexual!

Amanda Palmer

Amanda is the lead singer, pianist, and lyricist for The Dresden Dolls, is in a duo called Evelyn, Evelyn and also front Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra. Basically, calling her a "band member" is an understatement.

She came out as bisexual in 2007 to AfterEllen saying, "I've slept with girls; I've slept with guys, so I guess that's what they call it! I'm not anti trying to use language to simplify our lives." She eventually married Neil Gaiman and the two had a son at the end of 2015.
