The Vampire Diaries is, sadly, over… but the friendships among the cast members (well, at least for some of ’em) will last a lifetime; Ian Somerhalder & Kat Graham are one such pairing that plans on remaining close, despite not filming opposite each other every day. “He’s the person I can say in 30 years will be one of my closest friends,” Kat told AOL. And that’s coming from the woman who revealed that she and the TVD heartthrob once hated each other!
You remember how Damon & Bonnie couldn’t stand each other at the beginning of the CW television drama? Well, it looks like art imitated life. “Ian and I used to not like each other at all,” Kat said. “We hated each other first season. Now he’s my best friend in the cast.”
“We wanted to kill each other,” she continued, “but I was a kid and we were both very strong people. I was still finding myself, and throughout the years, he’s helped me find myself and is now one of my greatest inspirations.”
BUT, while you may think that continuously shooting a TV series opposite each other forced them to get along, it was actually something you wouldn’t ever guess that bonded the 27-year-old beauty and the 38-year-old hottie. “I think what bonded us was that… Ian, at the time, was working with [acting coach] Ivana Chubbuck, and I started working with her after he started working with her, and I think she was the one that kind of helped bring us together; it was the work as an actor,” she revealed to us on the set of her recent Foster Grant photo shoot in NYC.
“But I’ll definitely say that once we started becoming friends, and once we realized that the other person was really serious about making the world a better place, we would talk about a lot of things (like things that I don’t think anybody else wanted to talk about),” she added with a laugh. “But we had each other there to talk about our concerns in the world and about politics, and it was good to have a friend like that on set.”
Kat & Ian also have philanthropy in common. Kat is the Goodwill Ambassador for Empower 54, which is an organization that rehabilitates IDPs and refugees in Africa, plus she’s been working with GLAAD on LGBTQ rights. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. “Ian’s got a foundation,” she said. “He and I have kind of collaborated on some things like the water project with ISF [Ian Somerhalder Foundation]. And Nikki [Reed] does a lot of great stuff for animals and PETA and stuff like that.”
If you’ve been missing Kat, stay tuned — her new movie, All Eyez on Me, comes out on June 16!
Ian & Kat, plus 10 other celebrity enemies turned BFFs:
Louis Tomlinson & Liam Payne
One Direction started off on a sour note, with two members hating each other. "The funniest thing now is that me and Louis did not get on. At all," Liam explained. "We were two completely different characters... There was one point where I literally wanted to whack him."
Louis echoed his sentiments, saying, "We used to be at each other's throats on The X Factor. He took it so, so seriously."
Thankfully, they got it together to perform some of the greatest music teens today have ever known.

Ian Harding & Troian Bellisario
Things behind the scenes of Pretty Little Liars weren't always pretty.
During a Good Morning America segment to promote the 2013 Halloween episode of the series, Troian shared a little tidbit: she wasn't always a fan of Ian!
"I got into a huge fight [about biology] with Ian," she revealed about their first meeting. "He just annoyed me." Clearly, they've gotten over it.

Luke Hemmings & Michael Clifford
Before the two joined forces to create half of 5 Seconds of Summer, they were sworn enemies. Luke revealed, "We actually hated each other for a solid year of my life."
Fortunately, the two forgot their differences and bonded over their love of music.

Kendall Jenner & Taylor Swift
The feud between Kendall & Taylor was a longstanding rumor, what with Kendall dating Harry Styles after he & Taylor called it quits. He inspired an entire album, so it would make sense if Tay felt a bit of a sting.
However, the two clearly let bygones be bygones 'cause KJ appeared on stage right beside TS on stage in London during the 1989 Tour, like all of Tay's besties!
Taylor Swift & Kelly Osbourne
Kelly was known for taking jabs at pretty much every star on Fashion Police, and Taylor was no exception. On one particular episode, KO exclaimed, "My biggest pet peeve about Taylor is that she walks on stage in front of 25,000 people and still goes, 'Me? You're here for me?' Of course, you're Taylor Swift, get over it!"
Like plenty of other Taylor Swift feuds, though, T & K put that mess behind them. Taylor even invited Kelly over for a major baking session!

Lorde & Taylor Swift
Like we said, a lot of Taylor Swift's feuds come to an end. One of the most notorious was her beef with her future bestie, Lorde. Or, rather, Lorde's beef with her.
In an interview with Metro, the curly-haired brunette said Tay's image was "so flawless and so unattainable," which didn't sound too harsh, but then she added, "I don't think it's breeding anything good in young girls."
But the two clearly didn't let that quote get in the way of a great friendship.

Lorde & Selena Gomez
Speaking of Lorde, she took a dig at Selena, too. "I'm a feminist," she told Rolling Stone. "And the theme of [Selena's] song is, 'When you're ready, come and get it from me.' I'm sick of women being portrayed this way."
When Selena caught wind of Lorde's comment, she fought back, telling Flaunt magazine, "That's not feminism. [Lorde is] not supporting other women. That's my honest opinion, that's what I would say to her if I saw her."
While they're not besties by any means, the two are definitely friendly toward each other, even coming together to cheer their mutual friend, Taylor, on at the 2014 American Music Awards.
Miley Cyrus & Demi Lovato
Back in the day, Miley had a YouTube channel with her friend, Mandy Jiroux, called The Miley & Mandy Show, the same time Demi Lovato & Selena Gomez would occasionally vlog with each other. And Miley didn't seem to be having any of the competition — M&M even took a jab at Demi's former gapped-tooth smile! Not cool.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the two became BFFs. Demi even showed her support for Miley at the Hannah Montana: The Movie premiere in London.
Miley Cyrus & Emily Osment
They played the best of friends on Hannah Montana for years, but that didn't signify a good relationship when the cameras weren't rolling.
According to Miley's 2009 autobiography, Miles to Go, she & Em hated each other off-screen. "Our characters got along so well," she wrote. "Why couldn't we act the same in real life?"
It took some time, but they finally came together to form a beautiful friendship. "Now when I look at Emily, I don't feel insecure or competitive or annoyed at our differences," she explained. "It was worth it, worth all that fighting and tolerating... The friendships that take work can be the ones that are most rewarding."

Lucas Grabeel & Ashley Tisdale
Before getting to know one another throughout the duration of the High School Musical films, the blond(e) actors couldn't stand each other.
Ashley told People, "We would hardly talk to each other. When I was auditioning for [mean girl] Sharpay, I screen-tested with [Lucas] and I was acting like Sharpay. I think he was like, 'Who is this girl telling me what to do?'" No wonder she got the part!
