Tween Saves BFF from Bleeding to Death After Reading The Hunger Games

Some people are criticized for reading too much, but that’s not the case with a tween from Massachusetts. Megan Gething, 12, was playing in a marsh in Gloucester, Mass., at the beginning of the month when she heard her friend scream. Mackenzie George was trying “to get [a pair of shoes, but] slid on the muddy part” and hit her leg on a welded steel pump. While she “didn’t feel anything” at first, the impact left a 10-inch long, 3-inch wide cut that was gushing blood.

“I thought I just bumped my leg, but when I pulled it up I saw the cut and I started screaming to call 911,” Mackenzie said.

Luckily, her BFF’s love for The Hunger Games came in super handy and saved her from possibly bleeding to death. The 12-year-old grabbed a spare pair of shorts and wrapped it around the gash, creating a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

“I knew it from a book [THG] I read,” Megan explained. “I figured it was a well-known method of stopping bleeding.”

MG instructed their other friend, Zoe Tallgrass, to run and get help and about three minutes later her dad and brother were there to carry Kenzie to their backyard to wait for an ambulance. The injured girl was treated at Boston Children’s Hospital where she had to get surgery so doctors could “see how deep [the wound] was and if there was muscle damage or nerve damage.”

Fortunately, there were neither of those things and physicians say she’ll be fully healed in a month.

Officer Gregory George, MG’s dad, expressed his gratitude for his daughter’s friend by saying, “Megan was the star of the show. Thank goodness she was there. Mackenzie would have lost a lot more blood, and it could have been life-threatening if she hadn’t done what she did. We want to celebrate what she did and what an amazing kid she is. And how incredible it is, without any formal training, to be able to stay calm in such a stressful situation. It’s just amazing. We thank god that she was there to help out, and we’re very appreciative that she did.

Thank goodness for Megan and thank goodness for The Hunger Games book series!

All the injuries the cast of The Hunger Games suffered on set:

Josh Hutcherson

While play-fighting with Jennifer Lawrence on the set of the very first Hunger Games, Jen accidentally got too rough and kicked Josh right in the temple.

This lead to his very own concussion. And the cameras weren't even rolling!

Liam Hemsworth

Poor Liam was limping around the set of the first Hunger Games for a while, after twisting his knee during a scene. O-U-C-H.

Sam Claflin

While in rehearsals for Catching Fire, Sam was practicing stunts with one of the stunt professionals and accidentally broke his hand. WHA-?! His costar, Alan Ritchson (a.k.a. Gloss), described it as "tough to watch."

Michelle Forbes

While filming her role as Lt. Jackson in Mockingjay — Part 2, Michelle managed to sprain her ankle and busted her knee. What a way to introduce yourself to the franchise.

Liam Hemsworth (again!)

Liam fell while on the set of Mockingjay — Part 2, resulting in a twisted ankle and, worst of all, a hairline fracture. But he brushed it off like NBD because, you know, he's a Hemsworth and they're ballers like that.

Sam Claflin (again!)

While filming one of the running scenes in the latest installment of the series, Sam ran clean into the sewer.

And, to add insult to injury (or, rather, injury to injury), on his way down, he also hit his head on a pipe. Talk about a tough day at work!
