Swifties… it’s time for us to get real for a second. When Taylor Swift began her rapid rise to fame back in 2006, she was just 16 years old. Inevitably, with her sweet smile, adoring personality and super relatable lyrics, she quickly earned the title of “America’s Sweetheart.”
Maybe that was true back then, but now that over ten years have passed, we think it’s fair that we look further into the evidence and reevaluate whether or not Taylor is still worthy of this title.
While it’s true that she has always, to this very day, maintained an amazing relationship with her fans, it seems like over the past several years, Taylor’s relationships with some of her music industry peers have gone downhill… and fast! Whether it’s drama between her and one of her former flames, a fellow female pop star or a certain rapper and his reality star wife, it’s no secret that the 27-year-old blonde has managed to let some shadiness slip from her lips in these last few years. Here’s our list of the shadiest things Taylor Swift has ever said:
When she threw shade at Kanye West during the 2016 Grammys.
Last year, while standing at the podium accepting her award for Album of the Year for 1989, Taylor took the opportunity to create a little extra buzz around the recent drama between her and Kanye West.
As the story goes, Kanye included explicit lyrics about Taylor in his song, "Famous," which he, to this day, insists she approved of beforehand.
However, at the Grammys, Taylor couldn't have made her disapproval any more clear. Before she confidently walked off stage, she said, "There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you're going, you will look around and you will know it was you, and the people who love you who put you there." BURNNN!
When she posted a screenshot explaining that she never approved Kanye's lyrics to "Famous."
When Kim Kardashian-West leaked video proof of Taylor approving the lyrics to Kanye's song, "Famous," to the world, the universe was in absolute shock. How was Taylor Swift going to find her way out of this mess?
Not much later, Taylor released a statement of her own, which appeared on Twitter as a screenshot from the Notes app in her phone. In the note, she defended herself, saying, "Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me 'that bitch' in his song? It doesn't exist because it never happened… Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination."
She went on to say, "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009."
When she finally opened up about her beef with Katy Perry in Rolling Stone.
Even though Katy Perry has been speaking up a lot lately about the ongoing feud between her and Taylor, for years fans have been wondering what exactly caused the rift. With not much to base their assumptions off of, fans finally felt like they struck gold when Taylor spoke out about the drama in Rolling Stone back in 2014.
Taylor told the magazine, "She did something so horrible. I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me."
When she "thanked" Harry Styles at the 2013 VMAs.
When Taylor graced the VMA stage back in 2013 to accept the award for her hit single, "I Knew You Were Trouble," we should've known that her acceptance speech was going to be at least a little bit shady.
When it came time to thank those who helped her with the song, Taylor included an extra special shoutout. "I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these!" The camera immediately cut to her ex, Harry Styles, who appeared to remain calm, but was probably more than likely DYING on the inside.
When she called out Joe Jonas on national television for breaking up with her on a 27-second phone call.
Who can forget the moment Taylor Swift appeared on The Ellen Show and totally called Joe Jonas out for breaking up with her in the worst way possible? Not us!
When Ellen questioned Taylor about her relationship with Joe while she was there to promote her sophomore album, Fearless, she said, "That guy is not in my life anymore, unfortunately... But you know what? When I find that person that is right for me, he'll be wonderful, and when I look at that person, I'm not even going to be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18. I looked at the call log. It was like 27 seconds. That's got to be a record." OMG!
When she thought Nicki Minaj subtweeted her.
Twitter users, beware! If Taylor Swift thinks you're tweeting not-so-nice things about her, she will fire back.
Unfortunately, when Nicki Minaj tweeted, "if your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," Taylor assumed it was about her and her squad in the video for "Bad Blood" and immediately replied with some major shade. Taylor's response? "I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot." OUCH!
When she didn't think Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's 2013 Golden Globes joke was funny... at all.
When Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the 2013 Golden Globes, the comics let some jokes fly about Taylor Swift's love life that the superstar apparently didn’t think were all that funny. When the duo made what Tina later referred to as "benign jokes," Taylor fought back by telling Vanity Fair that Katie Couric once told her, "There is a special place in hell for women who don't support other women."
Hilariously, Amy agreed. She said, "I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff." LOL.
Is she still “America’s Sweetheart” all these years later? We’re going to go with no… but you decide!
