While many of us imagine what it’s like to be friends with Taylor Swift on a daily basis, there are only a select few who actually know how it feels. Lorde is one of the 27-year-old’s longtime BFFs and even though she obviously loves the blonde, she admits it’s tough to have a bestie who’s arguably the most famous person in the world.
The “Greenlight” crooner told The Guardian, “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
Welp, we guess that’s one way to put it? People were quick to point out that the analogy was actually super insensitive to those who do suffer from autoimmune problems, such as Selena Gomez, who battles Lupus.
Someone tweeted in response, “I wonder how @selenagomez feels about this. What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make @lorde.”
While the 20-year-old says she actually “didn’t mention Taylor” specifically in the original interview, she understands that her quote wasn’t cool and apologized for making an ignorant comment.
Ella Yelich-O’Connor (Lorde’s real name) continued, “Regardless, I f*cked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry.”
Not many people can admit to being wrong and apologize for their mistakes, and we give Lorde credit for doing just that.
Here’s how 8 of Taylor Swift’s squad members met her for the first time:
You have Taylor & Selena's exes, Joe Jonas & Nick Jonas, respectively, to thank for their first meetup. "We actually both met backstage at a Jonas Brothers concert," the brunette beauty explained on The Ellen Show. That was all the way back in 2008!
"Taylor and I dated Jonas Brothers together," she told the Herald Sun on a separate occasion. "We met when she was 18. I was 15 or 16. She was so great to me. Then we became best friends. She would fly out to see me when I was going through something really hard. We'd eat a lot of fattening food and vent."
Taylor & Hayley go all the way back to 2008, too — only, instead of JoBros, they have Tay's mama to credit for their initial friendship.
"We actually met at this Grammy party," Hayley told MTV News. "And her mom came up to us [Paramore] and was like, 'It's so nice to meet you guys, you've got to meet my daughter'... I think we exchanged numbers, and we started hanging out in Nashville not too long after that."
Man, 2008 was a big year for T.Swift — and we're not just talking about the release of her second studio album, Fearless. It was also the same year she bumped into her future bestie, Emma.
"We met at the Young Hollywood Awards, it was for HollywoodLife," she told MTV News. "We met there 3 years ago, and then I listened to some of her music, and I wrote her an email saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out."
And guess who just so happens to be the one to introduce Tay to Haiz...
She told E! News, "We met, oh my gosh, like, 3 years ago," back in 2010, "through our mutual friend Emma Stone."
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show didn't mark the first time Tay & Lil met. In fact, by the time T.Swizzle started performing at them, the two were already the best of friends.
So, how'd they meet? The VS Angel revealed on HuffPost Live, "Taylor is amazing. She's such a good friend. We both live in Nashville. She came to one of my husband's [Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill] concerts, and we found out we were neighbors, and then we became friends."
Speaking of VS Angels, Taylor's friends with a bunch of 'em — and that bunch includes Karlie Kloss.
While the two gushed over each other on Twitter before they ever met IRL, there first face-to-face meeting happened thanks to a mutual friend. (HINT: We JUST mentioned her.)
"Taylor and I met at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2 years ago," she dished in Glamour after their November 2013 meetup. "Lily Aldridge introduced us. She was like, 'Okay, you two are kindred spirits. How have my two nice American friends never met?' And that was it..."
Prior to her first meeting with Taylor, Lorde had actually spoken about her in an interview, saying she wasn't a good role model because she's too "perfect." Soon after the quote made headlines, Taylor sent Lorde flowers after one of her shows. From then on, there was no bad blood. In fact, Taylor didn't even know Lorde had spoken about her beforehand.
"We met up here in New York" in 2014, she said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. "We had Shake Shack, which I feel like is kind of a good bonding... a friendship like bonds with those thick-ass milkshakes."
The Fifth Harmony singer's friendship with the "Out of the Woods" crooner may not go back as far as Selena's or Hailee's, but she's definitely a major part of the crew.
The pair first met back in August 2014, courtesy of a little show called the MTV Video Music Awards.
"She probably doesn't even remember this," Camila told Teen Vogue. "But the first time we met at a VMA party, the first thing I asked her about was songwriting advice." Aww.
