Whether it’s emotional or physical, violent relationships are more common than we would like to believe. (We would like to believe that they’re less than rare; that they don’t even exist, actually.) Sadly, even some of your favorite YA actresses have been stuck in these harmful — and often dangerous — situations.
Rather than dwelling in their fear and pain, these strong young women have shared their stories in order to help those in similar circumstances. Or, in one particular instance on the below list, the female talent is known as the one to commit the domestic violence against her partner. (Yes, men get abused, too!) From Lily Collins to Sarah Hyland, here are six young adult film actresses who have been in an abusive relationship:
Lily Collins opened up about her physically and emotionally abusive relationship in her 2017 book of personal essays, No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me. Lily, who starred in The Mortal Instruments in 2013, addresses a former relationship in the tell-all book in which she was emotionally abused before becoming physically abused. She told People.com that her former boyfriend grabbed her neck with his hand during a heated argument. The act was eye opening for the brunette beauty, who ultimately ended the negative relationship.
Although she admits it's an awkward subject to talk about, she chose to be candid in hopes of inspiring her fans.
Vampire Academy star Sarah Hyland filed for a restraining order after her abusive ex-boyfriend attempted to choke her so hard that she could not breath or speak. Sarah reportedly said that her former beau, actor Matt Prokop, sent her frightening and disturbing text messages, as well as voicemails in which he included suicide threats.
She bravely shared her story on The Meredith Vieira Show and explained that people must go through things in order to become the person they are today. Kudos to her for turning her story into an inspiring message for all.
The Maze Runner leading lady Kaya Scodelario's former boyfriend found himself in legal trouble after he reportedly hit a man with his car, leaving him with brain damage and blind in one eye. She broke up with him soon after he displayed this type of behavior.
According to her ex, Elliot Tittensor, the man he hit was being too aggressive toward the Skins alum. Although Elliot didn't harm Kaya during this particular incident, she had to testify about it in court.
In 2013, Nerve star Emma Roberts was arrested for alleged domestic violence against boyfriend and American Horror Story co-star Evan Peters. Although he decided not to press charges, he was left with a bloody nose and bite marks on his body.
Shockingly, the couple got engaged in 2014... before breaking it off in 2015. They reportedly got back together and split up once again in 2016. Despite the couple's on and off relationship status, they are reportedly back together, and, here's the kicker: it is believed they are engaged once again after Emma stepped out in January wearing a ring.
Amber Tamblyn, who played Tibby in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, took a stab at the POTUS when she decided to publicly share her abuse story via Instagram in October 2016.
In the post, she explained that she was once in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship before ending it. During a night out with friends, she ran into her ex, only to be physically abused in a public area. She wrote, "His fingers were practically inside of me, his other hand wrapper tightly around my hair. I screamed and kicked and cried."
Although she admitted that she feels shame in regard to the incident, she felt she needed to share her story.
You know her as Cady Heron from Mean Girls and Lola from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, but Lindsay Lohan has faced far bigger problems than standing up to Regina George and Carla Santini.
In regards to her former relationship with Egor Tarabasov, LiLo said he became violet and aggressive during some fights. The former child star has since called things off with the man whom she used to be engaged to. Egor, meanwhile, has denied claims that he was abusive during their relationship.
