It’s not unusual for a child celebrity to undergo some emotional crises as a teen — for goodness’ sake, growing up in the spotlight would take a toll on anyone!! It’s hard to be scrutinized all the time, especially when you’re so young. Celebrities are told they’re too fat, or too skinny, all the time and not even young age can stop this criticism.
Unfortunately, our favorite YA movie actresses are not impervious to the media’s harsh eye. All of the females below battled an eating disorder when they were teens — for some, this occurred while they were in the public eye, and for others, they were still just regular ol’ kids at the time. What’s most important to remember, however, is that all these ladies have overcome their problems with the various diseases and want to remind fans who are struggling that they can, too.
Back in her early teens, The Mortal Instruments actress Lily Collins suffered from a severe eating disorder. The behavior associated with it included "restricting her intake of food, bingeing and purging, abusing laxatives and diet pills, and perhaps more significantly, hiding it all from her friends and family," according to Shape magazine.
Eventually, the disorder wore her down — she knew she needed to tell somebody. With the help of her mother, Lily got treatment and overcame the ED. Now, she's healthier than ever and is an advocate of living a healthy life.
This Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 actress opened up to Cosmo about her eating disorder back in 2012, saying, "I would go days without eating... or maybe I'd have some fruit and then go to the gym for three hours." She noted that she knew the lifestyle was unhealthy, but that changing her ways was an extremely gradual process — it didn't happen overnight. Now, she's eating (and living) better than ever.
Zoe Kravitz, Divergent star, first revealed information about her horrible eating disorder back in 2015. The actress finally beat it in 2013, and wanted to share her story with the world.
Basically, she was diagnosed with both bulimia and anorexia and they were working together to kill her body. Being a young girl and growing up surrounded by fame, she said, were two of the biggest factors that contributed to her disorders. It was a long road before she could fully love herself, but she eventually got the help she needed and is now confident and comfortable in her own skin, and couldn't be happier!
In her teen years, this Divergent actress also suffered from a bad eating disorder. Kate knew she wanted to be in movies from a young age, and because she was slightly heavier than she wished to be at the time, she started to diet to lose weight. The actress "became hooked on over-the-counter drugs" that encouraged weight loss and eventually became addicted to being skinny.
Today, however, the 41-year-old has a very "laissez-faire" attitude about weight and is an inspiration to young girls struggling with their own body image issues.
Mary-Kate Olsen, half of the OG #twinsquad and Beastly star, suffered from a horrible eating disorder during her high school years — it came to the point where her body looked so frail that the media was concerned. Eventually, MK's dad and therapist committed her to a treatment center where she could get the medical attention she needed to heal in a safe environment. Luckily, the actress is back on her feet today and doing much better since her days in rehab.
Lindsay Lohan is yet another YA actress who struggled with an eating disorder. The Mean Girls star admitted to being bulimic and and addicted to drugs when she was a teen. She told reporters that she was so sick that people were afraid she'd die. Eventually, Lindsay was hospitalized, due to a kidney problem she'd developed from her eating disorder and she finally got the treatment she desperately needed.
